Any hope for the orange frock?

It's my little sister's wedding in month and a bit.

I wore this www.johnlewis.com/93717/Style.aspx to my son's Christening. Nearly sent it back but was persuaded that it suited me. Not sure it did in any way. Oddly, though, I got a lot of compliments about it.

Should I wear it again?

I like the dress but think the colour is a bit much on me - pale skin etc. Photos of Smeraldina in frock on my profile. Not great pics. But happy ones.

Can the frock be redeemed? Or is it an expensive turkey?

A different cardigan? What shoes? Or shall I just give up on it? I usually wear muted colours, greys, greens, browns etc. And more fitted, longer lines....

Any suggestions or opinions gratefully received! I am size 10 ish. 5 foot5

I LOVE it-am a big fan of orange, and that looks fabulous. I might be inclined to go for a more structured cover-up. A jacket, maybe? Dark navy blue works well with orange, and then either tan or nude shoes.

skidoodly · 27/07/2010 18:27

Love it.

Mumsnut · 27/07/2010 19:50

Some fake tan and you're set! It is lovely.

moragbellingham · 27/07/2010 21:50

It does suit you and orange is not your average wedding colour so a definite

smeraldina · 27/07/2010 22:48

Ok. Right. Thank you everyone....Wasn't expecting this. Was expecting a kind but honest -- no, we think it's not a good look.
Hmmm.
If I am going to wear it for the wedding am not convinced by the blue cardigan but not sure about an alternative. Navy is a bad colour on me. I have a white swing coat. But that will be pretty hot in early Sept. A tan coloured swing coat? A leopard print swing coat? It's the flipping lilac and silver bits on the dress that are the problem. If they weren't there I think I'd love the dress. Perhaps I can customise it. Tethersend? Can you help?

Anyone who wants to weigh in and say that they don't like it, do feel free. Actually, you've probably got better things to do with your evenings but hey...

TheCat - I don't think anyone in my family would give a toss that I wear it again, so same dress is fine, but I would like to make it a bit different to mark the specialness of my sister and her wedding.

Mumsnut for complicated reasons I can't do fake tan so I'm condemned to be the colour of a peeled prawn....

actually i think the colour is good with your paler skin. a dark fake tan would look a bit WAG on you i think.

and i also think that the trim on the dress really lifts it

are you sure your best colours are muted greens and browns?

ponceydog · 27/07/2010 23:33

the frock is v nice but I'd go for a lighter purpley shade for your cover-up, more like the scarf in your picture.

I came across this bracelet recently and I love it.

ponceydog · 27/07/2010 23:43

these sandals would tie in

PrimroseCrabapple · 28/07/2010 01:52

silver shoes would be nice. you really suit it btw. Purple pashmina would be fab.

franklampoon · 28/07/2010 02:22

add colourful beady necklace and earrings and red lipstick and get your hair put up. Smashing!
You look lovely by the way

KristinaM · 28/07/2010 09:40

op - i note that you are rather accessory lite. Are you secretly scared of colour?

Mumsnut · 28/07/2010 09:44

Nooooo - don't spoil it with a great big cardigan. Just a pashmina and bracelet and heels. I think nude would be good ... but someone will be along to correct me.

belgo · 28/07/2010 09:47

It's lovely!

DO NOT get a fake tan, as another poster suggested, it will only clash with the dress. It looks great with paler skin.

moragbellingham · 28/07/2010 16:50

I second the Kristina M comment in a please don't think I'm being rude and I'm no expert - but the bright orange and purple REALLY suit you

smeraldina · 28/07/2010 21:45

Right. Yup I have to admit KristinaM and morag I avoid colour. And accessories. Perhaps I should branch out. I do wear mostly sludges except for a flash of kermit green. An ex boyf once told me, when I'd bought yet another brown jumper, that I looked like a giant poo. Probably best to lose that boyfriend. Wonder where he is now. Working for Colour me Beautiful?

I like big earrings but the baby pulls them (and my ear) off. But I think I have just about trained him not to.

Anyways. MUCH cheered by you all. And by the thought that I don't have to a) find and b) buy a whole new dress. I actually like buying accessories (and love that bracelet poncey) -- I am going to play around with the dress pashmina heels combo - no cardi - jewellery - and see how I go.

KristinaM · 28/07/2010 22:29

do you live in the country? that might explain your lovely skin, fear of colours / accesories/ make up and love of poo

i suspect you are not making the most of yourself [wags finger]

you are very pretty and should stun them all at the wedding with a bit of effort. remember you are Sister of the Bride and VIP

tell me about your shoes, bag and jewellery please
