Have spent the day shopping with DD and we only found one or two that even came close to her requirements.
She only wants a cool backpack big enough to carry everything around in!

Hello, this thread is a little old now and some of the links are out of date. Take a look at this handy page for a round up of the best backpacks, chosen by Mumsnetters.

yep all this was a shock to my system with DD who is 13.
DS is 18 but has aspergers syndrome and really didnt care about fitting in - it was much easier! i used to be the one to study what all the other kids had just so i could try and get him a bag that wouldnt stand out!

DD has said she would like another Gola bag for this year - she got a really nice across the body one in grey and pink. the stitching is just starting to go on it but it did a year.

sorry bigtilly - i just wondered why i got the humphy face!

boyes here

im not sure if there are only around here ooop north or not, but i got DS backpacks from there as they did sports rucksacks very cheaply. i got DS his last one for college from there and it was a designer one for £12.

that's very sensible of you, cat, but there is no way the young adults around here will take a backpack to school and they just don't care much about comfort and dryness.

Bigness, yes - they bother about bigness.

ds1 has just said that he wants a backpack not a messenger bag when he starts yr 7 in Sept.

Wonder how long it will be before he changes his mind

he will be cycling not walking so I think a backpack will be easier to carry

ponceydog · 25/07/2010 13:57

are boys the same? I don't know what boys carry.

Multimummy · 25/07/2010 13:59

Try www.mandmdirect.com - infact they have lots of school gear, and school shoes too!

Monty100 · 25/07/2010 14:00

I was going to say TKMax too.

Poncey - My ds is the same.

AnnoyingOrange · 25/07/2010 14:02

Nooooooooooooooo to backpacks for children in secondary school - just not the done thing!

All the girls that walk down are road have posh carrier bags, the boys have across the body bags like the gola/lambretta ones. DS1 has gola.

nancy75 · 25/07/2010 14:03

have a look in paperchase, alot of the girls round here use their magazine bags

doglover · 25/07/2010 14:37

With my pfb starting secondary school in Sept, I've been following this thread with interest. We have just ordered her a messenger-style bag from Amazon which she likes (at the moment!). At only £9.45, I can cope if it only gets used for the first term! I can't do links but it's a BagBase messenger bag and comes in 11 colours. HTH.

Batteryhuman · 25/07/2010 14:45

My DSs use backpacks because they have long walks to school/college. For surf labels I would try TKMaxx or the M and M Direct website. If not label conscious or you worry they will become so on september the 5th then Millets, a supermarket or market stall.

Ebay do a roaring trade in Jane Norman carrier bags.
