Can you do a layered bob thing with really thick hair?

I need a new hairstyle - I'm in the mood for radical change. I currently have the Aging Hippy style - it's shoulder length, very thick, looks great and wavy when wet but when dry it turns to frizz. And no matter what I do it falls into a centre parting.

The problem is the shorter it is, the wavier/frizzier it gets, and that's why I've kept it long for so long. If I went for something like this would it work? Does that only really work with thin hair?

Or there's this, with a fringe - too young for 44? I love this.

But with thick frizzy hair will I just look a bit insane? I need really low maintenance - I don't even own a hairdryer. If any one has any thoughts I'd be massively grateful.

I think you need to find a decent hairdresser and talk to them.

But I wouldn't worry about styles being too young - you make it suitable for you with your clothes, accessories and make up.

One thing: you might have to lose your hairdryer aversion if you want decent-looking hair.

Thanks for replying - appointment is 11.30 and I'm getting nervous. I'll have a chat with her - I'm just so bored of it long, but I suspect taht's the only way to control the frizz.

I have something like your second pic (my hair is brown), and I had long hair until a few weeks ago! I'm in my 40s. My hair isn't that thick but it does have a tendency to go frizzy. I use this creme stuff from the hairdresser which has been great! I don't use a hairdryer either. The thing is, I thought my hair would go dead wavy if it was shorter, but that hasn't happened - maybe cos it's all one length still.
Good luck, let us know how you get on!

That's reassuring to know - thanks. And yes, I have to get my act together re the hair dryer thing!

Definitely choppy layers- I've just had hair cut with this- otherwise hair is huge cow pat.
Not good.

What did you go for?

DinahRod · 24/07/2010 17:57

If the cut is really good and your hair heavy you might not need a hairdryer. But I would recommend a tiny amount of Paul Mitchell's Gloss Drops to take out the halo frizz effect/smooth it once you have your hair how you like it.

If you do go for more maintenance and use either straighteners (there are some some very good ones that are a lot cheaper than GHDs) or an air-styler, again product is the key, mousse in damp hair to help style it and some seal and shine at the same time to protect it/make it glossy.

frizz is about moisture, i didn't believe that my wavy/frizzy hair needed more moisture until i tried shampooing far far less (once a week now) and conditioning far far more (three to five times a week, whenever my hair gets wet) and watching for harsh cleansers.

i now have curls instead of frizz, it's great - though it took 3/4 weeks to get there.

I have a layered bob thing. Its so thick that when its been cut it goes beehive. I don't mind this at all

Hassled · 24/07/2010 19:01

The deed is done . I feel loads better - it's a sort of chin-length, wavy bob and the hairdresser chopped loads out and did feathery things in a bid to avoid Triangle Head. I think I look younger for it - we'll see what it's like once I've washed it etc myself.

Many thanks for all the advice .

Sounds great. This may be of interest to help with your frizzy curls.
