I'm off shopping now. It's pouring with rain and it was hot and blue sky when I dropped DS off. So I'm now going to wear a summer dress, Mac & leather boots. It doesn't look good but I thought you stylish ones will come up with some lovely ideas for the future.
I'll be back later.

Hmm, interesting.

Do you mean like the crinoline or wimple of our times?

Fashion moves so fast these days. I think the noughties look will be defined by bootleg jeans, layered top/tunic and converse, or the galaxy dress. But I am v. untrendy.

MayorNaze · 22/07/2010 12:51

oh crikey if anyone says jeggings i will lamp them...

MrsBadger · 22/07/2010 13:03

hmm well
the 20th century national costume would have to be a mid-calf full-skirted shirtdress and court shoes

so the 21st will be jeans and some sort of jersey top

Flighttattendant · 22/07/2010 13:12

Can you imagine the answers to this question in 1910? And how much things changed between then and 2000...

I don't think we have a clue what we'll be wearing in 70-80 years from now.

Flighttattendant · 22/07/2010 13:13

My suspicion is that clothes will be gone, we will be naked but for a thin layer of some sort of armour - painted on.

Clothes have always been a nuisance. I don't really mind

Nuttybear · 22/07/2010 14:28

No I mean national dress like the Sari, lederhosen or Flamenco dress. Some thing that would identify you as British in a positive proud way. The bowler hat & pinstriped suits are out.
If a foreign wore it at a fancy dress everyone knew they were Britain.
NO jeans are all over the world. I'm this countr Flightattendant Never minded in my 20's I mind now. On the other hand no clothes no looking in the mirror thinking bugger I need a size 16 now and it will look crap skin is skin

oh well, if you want to be immediately identified as British:

cropped leggings in a pale colour with muffin top
thong
too-tight too-short England-flag t-shirt
ill-fitting bra with armpit hamsters
belly piercing
misspelt or cartoon-based tattoo
plus for winter:
fake Uggs
anorak with fur-edged hood, cropped to display muffin top
or for summer:
enormous plastic sunglasses
terrible sunburn

'British in a positive proud way' is harder. Head-to-toe Cath Kidston, plate of scones in one hand, victoria sponge in the other?

Nuttybear · 22/07/2010 14:47

MrsBadger Well now you've got the negatives out of the way. Yes, I think your right Cath Kidston head-to-toe would be right as she has the Wellies, brollies and Mac's. Don't forget the picnic basket too! But I hate that stuff as its all over the place. But yes I'm going to find the flower dress, little cardigan, brolly & wellie boots & see if I can start a trend for wearing this stuff on High Days and Holy days when you've just got to country dance.

flowery dress
cardigan
umbrella
Hunter wellies
picninc basket
bunting
cupcakes

try p 45

Nuttybear · 22/07/2010 15:10

I haven't got my glasses on so I can't see the page numbers. I think I got the right page Yes yes yes. I will now wear this type of thing until I'm 90. Just need the right cagole and rainmac and I'll be set for years to come.
But I'll have to give up the Victoria sponge cake and fairy cakes (not cupcakes that's American isn't it) as I'm getting bigger and bigger and the stuff looks better with a 1940's figure (rations book here I come)I now need to know how to do a low bee-hive as I think it looks cool with this stuff.

Tweed!

Nuttybear · 22/07/2010 19:22

Ah! Yes, Autumn/Winter a Miss Marple style still with the Victoria sponge but of course crumpets instead. The wellies still work as does the brolly & Mac. Brillant! Will look for examples later

Yes, perfect!

I saw 3 women in the same Joules dress at our village fete!
All ages too, one teenager, one 40ish, one 60ish.

Nuttybear · 22/07/2010 22:51

Well I think we should start this by dressing like this all the time.

Scuttlebutter · 23/07/2010 22:23

I would say that the cardigan is the iconic British garment. Of course, depending on how stylish the national symbol was, it could be a lovely pampering cashmere, or it could be more of a droopy one. Also agree with wellies. My favourite phrase to sum up being British is "If wet, in village hall"...

PlumSykes · 23/07/2010 22:56

me, earlier today

Caz10 · 23/07/2010 23:07

Sorry, but as a Jock I have to say these all seem very English to me, not British!

Nuttybear · 25/07/2010 11:23

yes, For a Scot we haven't added enough warm clothes or tartan to the tweed. But as I have some Indiean blood in me I think a paisley scarf would go down well in Autum too.

I also haven't put my glasses on either.
