What's the deal with sweaty betty?

DewinDoeth · 20/07/2010 20:32

I want to buy attractive clothes to do sports in, but ones that don't make me look like I'm going to start doing a triathalon in the next 5 minutes (I swear I never will.)
Tried Sweaty Betty and they're ok on the website, but on me they're so weird! Tops so long! Weird rolldown bits on trousers!
And so expensive...
Where can I get similar but cheaper stuff. (Preferably that looks ok on my lumps and bumps - I'm a size 8-10 but look like an 18 in sweaty betty...!!)

elle gray

love there stuff and there sales are good

JamInMyWellies · 20/07/2010 20:40

They have gone into receivership.

DewinDoeth · 20/07/2010 20:41

Ok, thanks. I think I do need to find an attractive brand, because sports shops e.g. jjb sports make me want to hang myself in the changing rooms. They're so awful!

oh shit then,,,

DewinDoeth · 20/07/2010 20:43

Ooohhh, just did a search for ellie gray and indeed, they've gone into receivership.

I've just lost 2 1/2 stone and promised myself that when Ive lost one more I will replace all my gym/running things with new and beautiful items as a reward - but there really don't seem to be many out there. I'm looking for something for yoga, classes and realy the running doesn't matter that much as I do it at 5.30am and never meet anyone!

I've noticed at the gym the younger women have taken to wearing strange dress and skirt things, or shorts over leggins - is this the coming thing?

hatcam · 21/07/2010 07:43

Try sheactive.co.uk for a good selection of different brands and good customer service, very helpful if you want to order loads and send some back.

JJB sports is truly hideous, and judging by the state of the people who work in our local branch, they've never seen sport in any form never mind done any themselves. And it stinks.

I am well past being a younger woman and I'm loving the whole drapey/longer tops/leggings things - stops me holding in the entire time I'm teaching a class!

Bobbalina · 21/07/2010 07:48

Long tops are good for running and yoga.

I like sweaty betty although look out for sale time as it is ££££. Only some of the trews are roll down, the majority aren't. Do you just need to try on more styles from SB do you think?

What activity do you want stuff for running/ gym / yoga ... There are different specialty stockists

fizzytree · 21/07/2010 08:01

very nice gym stuff is lululemon. Very pricey, so would have to be a reward based thing.

bishboschone · 21/07/2010 09:10

I always get my running gear from tk maxx. They have a sports section so no need to rummage . I got a great pair of yoga type tracksuit trousers that are like spanx in trouser form!! Cheap too

flibbertigibbert · 21/07/2010 09:43

Nike have a lot of nice looking stuff on their website, so if you're in or around London you could maybe try Nike Town. I'm planning a trip once I've lost 2 stone.

DewinDoeth · 21/07/2010 09:53

hatcam exactly - JJB sports is the worst place. I went to Sports Direct as well, and that was the worse. The smell! The changing rooms had galvanised steel doors, were tiny, no hooks and clumps of hair on the floor. And the staff looked like they sniff glue at lunchtime.

I'm after softer stuff, for gym and workouts. I like the look of the yoga stuff, but obv. don't want it flapping around my legs as I try to do a grapevine!
Also, stuff that isn't black would be good. All the capris on 'sports' websites (JJB etc) are black. That's why I liked sweaty betty but their tops were all weird, the ones I tried. Tight vests and not v. flattering.

This is reward-wear too btw, but I'm only paying megabucks if I'm 100% happy with them, IYKWIM.

In TK Maxx this week they had lots of Calmia stuff, might be worth a look if there is one near you

ViveLaFrak · 21/07/2010 18:42

I was just pondering this very point. I do yoga mostly with a bit of cardio/weights and the vast majority of sportswear is pants.

Will check out lululemon and Nike. Any other recommendations?

poppy34 · 21/07/2010 18:48

Have you tried some of viewfrom stuff as they do have softer Lycra and it's not quite as loose as sweaty Betty.

Fwiw although expensive (I look out for sales) it does last well. You could also try eBay for dance wear (danskin , freeds) as they sometimes Do warm down or over trousers that can be nice in that soft slightly fitted yoga wear . Nike can do good stuff (but I have bought abroad as tends to be cheaper ) but does tend to be more running stuff- the yoga stuff has odd sizing (sis bought me some in large- it was so large that still didn't fit when I was 39 weeks gone).

abdnhiker · 22/07/2010 12:16

dewin I love lululemon - they're from Vancovuer originally and I used to shop there when they were just in a tiny store hidden away up a flight of stairs... Their trousers are amazingly flattering and last forever - I'm still wearing ones that are 6 years old, although I wore them in pregnancy and stretched them out a bit. If I can afford it I'll probably pick up another pair when I'm back in Canada next month...

beanlet · 22/07/2010 14:13

Actually, I totally love my sweaty betty yoga pants -- I'm wearing them right now; took me right through my pregnancy and out the other side. With the top rolled up they're amazingly comfy over my CS scar. Don't knock 'em till you try 'em.

traceybath · 22/07/2010 14:35

I like casall and the sale is on at the moment.

DewinDoeth · 22/07/2010 20:46

Ooh, lovely suggestions! I currently can't find lululemon in the uk, but will look harder!

With the sweaty betty stuff, got to say the tops I ordered are dreadful, but the capris are ok and I might keep them.

There's a lululemon on Marylebone High Street.

AesopsMables · 11/08/2017 17:10

Another recommendation for Lululemon here too
