Skin Tags (following on from the horned hoofs thread)

I have a couple of small skin tags on my top inside arms. DD loves them - she calls them 'squirrels'

I can't afford to pay to have them removed. But I did read online that they are easily removed by tying cotton thread around them very tightly. This cuts off blood supply & they then drop off - painlessly?

Has anyone ever tried this, or any other method of getting rid of skin tags? Please share. Thanks

I have one on my lower eyelid, so watching this with interest (not sure I'll be tying anything round it though..)

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/07/2010 15:52

Depends how small - I just picked all my pregnancy ones off (max 2-3mm in length)

CheeseandGherkins · 20/07/2010 15:52

I have a massive one on my inner thigh that I hate, I tried to get it removed at some beauty place that was cheap (about £20) but they couldn't laser it all as it was too large. Ended up very painful and with an infection....Don't see why they can't be done on the nhs as it isn't cosmetic, I also have one on lower eyelid, just below eye too.

MathsMadMummy · 20/07/2010 15:55

ooh watching this, DH has quite a few on his back.

I heard something about freezing them off?

FindingMyMojo · 20/07/2010 16:19

well if mine could be picked off DD would have done the job by now she is obsessed with them.

They do have blood vessels - which is why you tie the thread around them as it cuts off the blood supply.

CHEESE poor you - you can probably get yours done on NHS now!

I think they are largely classed as cosmetic. However my DR took a flat soft mole off my nipple when I was pregnant (It kept bleeding & I was worried about breastfeeding issues) - quick & painless & no scar. I wonder if he would do skin tags too?

my Gp removes them but Ive also done it myself. i froze it with an ice cube and then snipped it with nail clippers (these were tiny skin tags though, not as large as a squirrel)

CheeseandGherkins · 20/07/2010 16:34

I asked about 3 years ago so maybe it's changed now, they appeared during pregnancy. The large one rubs a lot as it's about half an inch, maybe more in length and wide as well. The other is really close to my eye so I'm quite wary of doing anything to it!

CheeseandGherkins · 20/07/2010 16:35

Oh and they said they would do it but it'd cost about £250

tulpe · 20/07/2010 17:07

I had one near my armpit but still on my chest, iyswim. It was small - just a couple of mm wide. I basically picked it off. I used my thumb and forefinger nails to squeeze at its base and eventually fell off. It bled a tiny bit, scabbed over and healed without a scar.

Not sure I would perform this self-surgery on a tag near my eye though

GetOrfMoiLand · 20/07/2010 17:14

Why do they not reove them on the NHS?

EccentricaGallumbits · 20/07/2010 17:24

don't be tempted with home surgery unles they are really small and can be picked off.

i had one i tied dental floss round, then tried freezing it with verucca freezer, then it went all pussy and i needed antiugs which made me really ill. then te day before it was supposed to be being removed by the Dr it fell off.

drs generally don't like to remove them if it's 'cosmetic' but tell them it's rubbing on clothes or catching and they should lop them off.

MinnieMummy · 20/07/2010 17:27

How long do you have to freeze it for??

Have picked a couple off in the past but I wouldn't say I managed to get right to the base IYSWIM so the area isn't quite smooth.

Any tips for pregnancy-induced freckles/age-spots??!

divingworldchampion · 20/07/2010 17:30

This is a bit gross but I had a couple of small ones on my neck and I got rid of them by pulling a hair out of my head and tying that really tightly round it (quite fiddly and takes a few goes).
After a few days the buggers went black then fell off.

sue52 · 20/07/2010 17:32

I had a small one on my neck. My aromatherapist tied some thread round it as Findingmymojo described, it turned black and dropped off a couple of weeks later. If I get another one I would do it myself. I wouldn't touch the area near my eye though.

CheeseandGherkins · 20/07/2010 17:41

The one on my leg does catch and rub all the time as it's quite large, might ask again at the drs and see what they say.

tobago04 · 20/07/2010 17:49

I had a small one on my neck,i just tied a bit of cotton around it,it went slightly bigger after a few days then it dried up and dropped off no problem

HowAnnoying · 20/07/2010 17:51

I cut mine off (chin and eyelid), they bled for a couple of minutes, now completely gone. Probably not the way to do it though....but I wasn't going to walk around with pieces of cotton wool hanging from my face!

FindingMyMojo · 20/07/2010 19:30

Thanks for sharing everyone.

OK I'm going to try thread on my arm one. It's small but too big for me to cut/pick it off. (DD has pulled on it loads and she's have it off if she could).

Watch ths space

Ouch ouch ouch - just go to your GP! I had our practice nurse freeze off one under my arm and a lovely matching pair I had on each eyelid. The eye ones she did by dipping a cotton bud in the liquid nitrogen rather than just spraying it btw, in case people had visions of frozen eyeballs...

MumtoF · 20/07/2010 20:26

Won't do any harm to try the cotton thing. It worked for me for one on my neck, just getting it round and pulled tight is a bit fiddly. If it doesn't work then you can go to the docs. Wouldn't cut it though, as if it is too big it will bleed alot!

agedknees · 20/07/2010 20:45

I use a silver nitrate stick on mine. They fall off and leave no scar at all.

For all those who have them on their eyelids - I had a huge one on each of my upper eyelid. I got them removed at a NHS eye clinic. Was told by the clinic if I got anymore to get them removed as they could turn nasty, and obviously if they are sited near your eye your sight could be impaired.

QuantaCosta · 20/07/2010 22:09

I had one under arm and one at top of leg. Did the cotton thing and they dropped off within a couple of days. No pain,no problem and no infection.

sue52 · 20/07/2010 22:15

Agedknees how do you get hold of silver nitrate sticks? They sound useful to keep around.

Carmel206 · 20/07/2010 22:25

I had one on my eyelid, my GP removed it with a tweezers type thing - didn't hurt, no mark left -I should think your GP will be able to deal with yours also.
