Am thinking of going blonde, as seem to be going grey anyway...

Has anyone else gone from brunette/red to blonde? I have my hair coloured anyway, and was wondering if blonde would be a good look. I don't tan and have freckles, though, so have some concerns about that. A hairdresser once told me that going blonde can really emphasise any complexion irregularities: true or not? And would I actually have more fun?

Get yourself off to somewhere good for a colour consultation as I think anyone can go blonde, it just getting the right shade that counts.

It'll be expensive as you might need a tint underneath higlights or something to start with.

However, I'm not a hairdresser, just someone who has done the same.

I am brunette and when I started going grey, mostly at my temples, I had some blonde highlights put in from the crown in slices... it looks nice and it's not such a massive shock as going for a full blonde head would be. The highlights disguise my grey really well too.

I am v pale. Don't know whether it emphasises my irregularities.... you'd have to ask someone else!

I think blonde shades can be difficult if you naturally have high contrast colouring like very pale skin and very dark hair.

It's easier if your natural hair and skin colouring is a bit more 'blended' together - then you just need to get the shade of blonde right.

What is your natural hair colour?

I've had this thought as my grey has multiplied rapidly of late. I'm a brunette with toffee highlights. I was getting away with having my colour done just 3 times a year, but its not lasting so long these days before the greys start to look bad.

So I was thinking of going blonde. But I used to be blonde, and I was back there every 6 weeks due to roots, as my hair is a dark mouse.

So if I'm going to have to go every 6 weeks anyway, I may as well just go a bit more often that I was (3 times a year - maybe step it up to 6 times a year, which is every 8 weeks!) and stay brown, as I actually LIKE being brunette!

I will go blonde again one day - but a nice ashy almost grey blond, which is many years away, when I'm at least 50% grey (well I hope its many years away)...

My natural colour is a sort of mousey ginger (nice!), I think - I haven't seen it in 15 years. I have normally gone redder but am presently a sort of reddish brunette. I'm not mega sure it suits me that well, tbh, and am due to get it done again on the 29th. I don't want to go bright red again, esp in summer as there is a danger of my face and hair clashing if I get a bit warm.
I'm almost at paper bag on head stage as it's been about 3 months since I last had it done!

It does sound as if going a bit lighter might suit you then, if your hair isn't naturally all that dark.

Although if it has been dyed darker that might present a few issues initially, but your hairdresser should be able to advise on that.

I'm a fan of making sure the hair colour you have is a colour you'd wear if it was a scarf, or t-shirt, if that makes sense. So if you don't suit beige or orange, don't have beige or orange hair Likewise with black, grey etc. So think about which shades and tones really suit you as colours, then go from there.

Got quoted £80, eep. This is for cut, colour (on roots) and foils. About right, or not? DH might be hard to persuade.

That's cheap!
That's what mine costs on an amazing special offer which comes around once in a blue moon.

I went from dark brown to blonde in one go and regretted it. I spent a fortune with a very expensive London colourist and ended up with ginger hair.

It took several expensive subsequent trips to different hairdressers to find a natural looking blonde and I destroyed my hair in the process!

If you want to go blonde I'd strongly recommend doing it gradually with highlights, my sister did this and had much less trouble than I did. Also be aware that roots grow fast, look awful and are expensive to keep up. They need to be done every six weeks. Highlighted hair can disguise them longer than a block colour. On a cheerier note, red lipstick looks great with blonde hair!

I'm doing highlights: I have an appointment for Thursday. Colour, cut and foils. I just thought, well, screw it.

Thanks for all the advice! Will let you know how it goes/post a photo/buy a hat.
