Anyone had their teeth straighten as an adult - Invisilign or 'invisible' braces?

I'm thinking of finally getting my teeth straighted (crooked front middle teeth) and wondered if anyone else has done this as an adult? There appear to be 3 main options

  1. traditional braces in a 'putty' colour which are meant to be less noticeable than silver 'train tracks'
  2. 'train track' style braces fixed on the inside so that they aren't visible.
  3. Invisilign - don't know much about this other than you wear some kind of plastic mould over your teeth?

Has anyone had any of these or suggest any other options? Is it painful, affect speech, how long does it take?

Thanks

I don't like the idea of having my real teeth filed down to stumps just to put veneers on them. For a start, veneers only last ten years, so really, that probably means 8!! You are going to be looking at getting that big expensive job re-done every 8 years or so for the rest of your life! And what happens if you live to be 90. I think it would be an impractical situation then.

My teeth aren't beautiful, they wont win any tomcruise awards, but I'm starting to prioritise just looking after them and holding on to them!!!

I am half way through orthodontic treatment and have been given the classic train tracks. Was unsuitable for invisalign because my teeth were too crowded. He also said lingual braces would not be suitable but not entirely sure why.

To be honest I have not loved having the braces. They are fairly inconspicuous, but I am very conscious of them. I think mainly because the upper track makes my lip protrude quite a bit. However, I am having this taken off in a couple of months and will have had for under a year, so will be well worth it in the long run. The lower track will be on a bit longer and I will need a permanent retainer on the back of the teeth as others have said.

My teeth are really straight already and i'm delighted i've done it. My orthodontist lets you pay in installments, or you can take out an interest-free loan. My treatment will come £2.5k.

The only other issue worth mentioning is that you have to beware of some foods - a couple of times I have had to go back and get the elastic bands changed because I have stained them bright yellow by eating a takeaway curry! They stain very easily and it's not a good look!

that seems acceptable, tracks for less than a year for £2.5. sacrifice worth making.

Silly but important question- how do you snog/kiss with a train track in your mouth for 2 years?

mrsgordonfreeman · 18/07/2010 15:51

I snogged several boys when I had braces the first time. I met DH when I had braces.

Apparently they don't really notice. Probably not a good idea to snog anyone who is also wearing braces. You would probably need to be separated by the fire brigade.

I had invisalign and thought they were bloody brilliant!

I had clear train track done when I was in my early twenties and my teeth are still straight.

I got them on the NHS for free through the Dental Hospital, but they said it would take 18 months to straighten but I think I wore them for 5 years, because it took so long to get the appointments to tighten the wire - eek!!

It was the best thing I ever did for my confidence though.
