Help me make the transition from bob to long hair as pain free as possible

Have definitely decided to grow out my bob - I do love it - but have had the same style for about five years and fancy growing it again before I get too old.

So, it's now got to that really annoying length where I just want to cut it all off and just lacks any sort of style.

Its now a just below chin length graduated bob.

I'm off on holiday in a few weeks and want to go to the hairdressers to tidy it up - but is there any particular style that will make the transition to long hair as pain free as possible?

Hi, i did this a couple of years ago and my hair definitely qualifies as long now. I kept the style as roughly a bob until it was near my shoulders, than gradually had more layers cut in to get it to a long style. I don't know if there's any easy way to do it, really. You have to just stick with it and be patient.

Don't let the hairdresser cut in layers. That always takes me back to square one. I also find a perm for me works. Curls until the whole thing grows out.

get some pretty hair accesories to pin the annoying bits off your face as it grows!

Tie it back/clips for holiday (if you can bear it) or a headscarf of some sort. Then when you're back home tie it up for a couple of months/rest of the summer and you'll be amazed how long it seems when you have it back down again. I have also been growing mine out too....yawn.

I second the tie it up route, I have been doing this for a few months and now it is nearly down to my norks much to my dd's disgust as it's as long as hers now

It will go through a messy/ drive you nuts stage but you have to persevere if you want it longer.

There are some lovely bobbles and clips out there just now, go on and treat yourself.

And also if you really want it longer leave the time longer between visits to your hairdresser longer, we always recommended 6-8 weeks for tidy ups and anything upto 12 weeks if you are growing it (otherwise your stylist is just taking off what you have just grown)

Thanks everyone - will go for the tie it back option - I have been clipping it to the side which seems to work quite well and doesn't make me feel so scruffy.

I had long hair for years so haven't experienced the pain of growing out since I was about 15!

I do it every 5-6 years. This has been my longest period of the yukky stage as I keep going back to short.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 15/07/2010 10:56

Tie it up and don't go near a hairdresser for six months. That's what I used to do - I went from short to bob to long about 6 times in my life!!

What I did, and I realise how bad this is going to sound but bear with me, was as soon as I could tie it into a ponytail, I did, but it was more of a paintbrush than ponytail, so I added a hairpiece. Now I know what you are thinking (!!) but it was a very, very good colour match and it gave the illusion of volume and I'd just sort of arrange it slightly messily at the back and not one person noticed (probably because the colour match was so impeccable)

Wouldn't blame you if that sounds too well, just wrong, but it worked for me until it had got past that shoulder length thing and then I could style it in a proper "long" style.

Its not for everyone but I thought I'd share just in case the idea appeals (probably not)
