What to wear to a party for which the dress code is 'fabulous'?

For both myself and my dh please The party is in a couple of weeks.

I have a dress which might do that I bought on a whim last year in the sale from Monsoon. I plan to dig it out once the kids go to bed and try it on again. It's a long black dress in jersey material, sleeveless so I'd have to find something to cover my shoulders if I was to wear it.
I remember feeling pretty fabulous in it but don't do dressing up so have no idea what I should be wearing to a fabulous party...

Ideas for dh too please. He's very shy and not really a party goer tbh so is feeling quite nervous about it.

Budget, should we need new clothes/shoes etc, is minimal.

uumm... Fake eyelashes, body glitter and Mac Plushglass lippy...plus a gold shrug and gladiator gold heels.

DH could wear a DJ? Or my DH trots out a navy velvet jacket he wears with blue jeans and looks faaaaaaaaaabulous in, smart but not in an over the top way.

For me fabulous=sparkle so I would make sure I had a some glitter or sequins somewhere. Mary's suggestion of gold shrug and gladiator sandals is fab, I'd also add a gold waist belt to jazz up the dress. If gold's not for you, a black sequined shrug adds sparkle but is a bit more understated. For your DH, how about a black shirt and trousers and a metallic or sparkly tie (not too over the top!) Would he wear something like that?

Go as Patsy and the other one from AbFab. Surely your husband would cross-dress for a night ..... maybe not!

BiancaCastafiore · 13/07/2010 17:21

Oh goodness - I was afraid everyone would say sparkle and I don't know how to do sparkle...
Tbh honest we're both pretty homey and don't really do a whole lot of going out these days so the whole thing is a bit daunting Silly I know.
I had really hoped my existing dress would do the trick but am now thinking maybe not

Wear your dress, especially if it makes you feel fab. But accessorise with a huge feather in your hair/killer shoes/sari material for shawl.

tethersend · 13/07/2010 18:34

I would say definitely not sparkle!

Gold yes, but sparkle no.

Black dress sounds good, love sauce's idea of feathers- how about this as a cover up with a gold necklace? this or this could really update the dress...

I would wear nude heels with it.

Thanks.
My dress is very much full length (simple maxi dress style - nice good weight jersey so hangs really well from empire line under my bust, very flattering over lumpy tummy!) so shoes would hardly be visible....I can't open the shoe link at the moment but heels make me taller than dh so I never usually wear them!
I like that little jacket

The host family are into all things vintage/Cath Kidston btw if that helps give an idea of the type of fabulous they are probably implying..

Any ideas as to what dh should wear too?

Oh if it's a maxi, ignore the shoes I linked to.

Get DH a 70s suit from ebay.

BiancaCastafiore · 14/07/2010 18:15

:O not sure dh would go for a 70s suits although I think it'd be great. I might just shop for one anyway and hope for the best.
