Who's had a colonic?

Not sure if this is the right place, but they usually happen in beauty salons!

I have been toying with the idea of colonic irrigation for years, but now suddenly I have a DS-less day off next week, not pg, tiny bit of spare cash and a new-ish salon locally that does them.

Should I see if I can book one?
Does it hurt?
Will it make me feel fab?
Will it make me thin?
What is it like?

Or should I save my cash and spend the day lying on the sofa watching repeats of CDWM?

Ooh I'm interested in this too. I've heard it does wonders, makes your gut less sluggish and reduces bloating. Aside from the logistics of it, I would be very interested in having it done, if I had some spare cash.

So will lurk here for responses...

I had this done 8 years ago when I lived in Australia. I had 3 done as they reccomend you do a course, you definitely need to do it more than once.

I did it to kick start a healthy eating/ exercise routine and lost over a stone. If you are keen for a new start I would really reccomend it.

I had it done at a specialised colonic unit, not at a beauty salon, so I would first investigate that they really know what they are doing. Not just a 2 day course iyswim.

I lay on a kind of plastic bed with a cover over me and nothing on waist down. You then insert a plastic tube a couple of inches up your anus . It is the size of a straw and you can hardly feel it. Then water is pumped slowly through it. The lady came and gave me some stomach massages but you are mostly left alone, I think it lasted about 20/30 mins. During, when you feel the need to go, you go and it washes past in a clear big tube! The lady had lots of stories of childhood plastic toys and suchlike being washed through that had obviously been in there for years.

Afterwards I was advised to eat very plain food, rice and steamed veg to not overload my system for a day or two.

I'm 19 weeks pregnant and really suffering with my digestion so would love it, although not recommended for pregnant women!

Hope this helps!

I had one as a health conscious student. Horrible experience, uncomfortable, didn't feel better after just a waste of money I'm afraid. Was as Lavita describes but without any good feeling after. Left me very windy too.
Felt better going to gym regularly and eating well.

YouMightKnowMe · 11/07/2010 18:55

There is an advert on the radio around here for a place that describes it "like taking a warm bath but on the inside"

I had some discomfort when doing it, which the lady said was pockets of air. They did say that you wouldn't get much from doing it only once. I went back every 2/3 days doing it 3 times in total.

Although, then went on a healthy/eating/ exercise thing so it's hard to say the benefit was entirely the colonic as I did an overhaul really, but my skin, hair, nails looked great and I felt amazing. Though as FGM says this could of mainly been due to the gym/food, hard to say but I felt it worked for me.

bunsandroses · 11/07/2010 18:58

I have had a few and they can make you feel amazing. I think your practitioner makes a big difference. It made me feel really light and like I could start again! I think it can make your skin clearer as well as all the toxins are flushed out of your body, go for it but make sure that you have some time to relax after its quite exhausting!

SloanyPony · 11/07/2010 19:07

I had a course many years ago with Margie Finchell in the West End - she was 80 or something but looked about 40 - has done Princess Di, Elton John, etc - so I have shared a butt hose with them.

It was good, but I dont think there's any genuine need for it. I did lose 5 lb after 2 of them though. I think I did have some impacted stuff in there.

Make sure you take some probiotic afterwards, you can end up with thrush if you dont replace some of the gut bacteria that washes away.

Celery · 11/07/2010 19:08

Having never had anything inserted up my bottom before, that's the bit that really freaks me out. What's that bit really like?

Lavitabella · 11/07/2010 19:12

Put a straw a little bit up you bum - it's like that I was going to write something smutty else then

SloanyPony · 11/07/2010 19:54

The insertion thing is no big deal really - it doesn't hurt as such, its not really fun but they dont make you feel undignified, you are lying on your side etc and they are quite um gentle...

flibbertigibbert · 11/07/2010 20:05

I'm interested in having this done but I've heard that it can make you extremely gassy for a few days afterwards - as in passing wind for 30 seconds at a time.

Did anyone find this?

ATinofBiscuits · 11/07/2010 20:11

fibbertigibebert, why does that comment make me laugh so much?

flibbertigibbert · 11/07/2010 20:15

It's a serious concern for me .

I was seriously thinking of doing it but I read a review online and there was a man talking about his 30 second wind.

I have problems with gas and bloating which is one of the main reasons for me wanting to do it but i'm scared about making it even worse.

BikeRunSki · 12/07/2010 21:23

Hmmm.... I think I might save my money and go to the gym instead!

lol at sharing a butt hose with Elton John

Whoamireally · 12/07/2010 22:35

How big is the straw? Does everything go up and come out of the same straw? It must be a bloody big straw for a childhood toy to get washed out of it? Just curious as I've been thinking about it for years, although I have to admit if I had a child free day it wouldn't be the FIRST thing I thought of doing

Lavitabella · 13/07/2010 00:03

No water goes in via a straw which is the same size as a drink straw. The rest comes out the normal way, the water just makes it easier to go

Whoamireally · 13/07/2010 10:49

Ahhhh I see...I thought it got pumped in and out via the same tube, I vaguely remember watching a documentary years ago and the therapist was talking about what was coming out ('oh yes, looks like a bit of pork chop there, and wait, what's that? A Megablock?')

Kind of like hopi ear candles but different hole, obviously

champagnesupernova · 23/07/2010 11:20

It's basically paying someone to give you the shits
I went (again supposedly swanky place in West End, dunno who else's butt hoses I have shared ) and felt both awful physically and ripped off financially afterwards.

Chatelaine · 23/07/2010 16:50

I have to say I do not remember anything straw like. It was definitely a tube, water went in, stomach massaged, then obviously suction applied. The process was clearly explained beforehand - water is pumped in to reach high up the colon and then drawn out, reversing the process iyswim. It was not remotely painful. As has been said you are on your side, it did not feel undignified and was all done very professionally. You should be offered the option of seeing the clear plastic tube (they position a mirror) so you have the satisfaction of seeing the results . You will be advised to take a probiotic. I had this done before a flight to Australia, and I have a horror of having to poop during a flight in the often vile toilets...I do remember I didn't GO for about 3 days afterwards and subsequently all went very smoothly

Chatelaine · 23/07/2010 16:53

Also - and this is important - all the waste goes directly into some sort of plumbed in unit, and not a bucket everything about the process is sealed and there is no smell!
