Right, I am going to get a boob job

So, after thinking about it for a few years (and talking myself out of it) I think I am going to get a boob job.

I am very petite, and before having children I was a small B cup - so I was small, but I did have breasts that I was reasonably happy with. But now they are more like an AA cup. I hate the look of them, and I just don't think I look like a woman. And it's impossible to buy any nice underwear.

I did consult someone about it a few years ago, recommended by a GP. His name was Mark Gittos. I am thinking of going with him. Any experiences of him or other surgeons? (in london)

I have a very desk based job (nothing physical) so was thinking of taking only a week off work. Is that realistic?

Osbega - do you have personal experience of this? Fortunately I don't need to start a saving fund as I have the money now for both the operation and any future treatment.

Jewels - I understand they last at least 10 years, but some people have had them for longer without any issues.

What a nightmare, having to have them replaced every ten years or so.

lovingthesun · 13/07/2010 23:31

I've had mine done...just over 13 years ago.

I was called concave at school & basically looked like an ironing board.

Now a 34c (broad back, full cup size), have under the muscle implants & have also bf 2 children. No problems with anything other than being self conscious & telling no-one (other than best friends). And you lot !

IMO they are slightly too big & if /when the ttime comes to do them again, will go smaller. Assume this is possible having watched Victoria Beckham go up & down sizes.

The guy that did mine has now retired, but I was refered to him by my dr.

my friend went to this guy after reading about him regarding ulrika johnson
v v good job and worth a shout?

Did you watch last night's Channel 4 prog The Ugly Face of Beauty? On it they gave a few warnings but Dr Christian was supportive of women wanting the surgery, he just wanted to arm them with the right questions to ask so if you didn't see it then it is worth a watch.

goodnightmoon · 14/07/2010 08:28

i watched that last night. It was pretty disturbing! I really want a lift (have wanted once since I was about 14 and my boobs immediately came in saggy) and probably will need implants too to give some fullness but it was scary to see exactly how much surgery is needed for that procedure. (as opposed to just shoving in the implant through a little cut under the boob.)

Jewelsandgems · 14/07/2010 09:06

I saw that programme too and was surprised to hear that if you go with the premium silicone implant they need never be replaced.

The lift procedure is way too evasive in my opinion, could never have that done. But would be up for the implants if I feel the need.

Daydreaming; I don't have personal experience but my friend saved up and has implants and after three years one dropped quite noticabley going lumpy in the process. Took her another 18 months to save up enough to have it replaced and she was extremly self conscious and depressed about it during that time.

She now adds money every month to her "tit fund" for future work

lovingthesun · 14/07/2010 10:21

..just wanted to add, don't underestimate the 'little cut under the boob'. I was in AGONY for days & could barely move.

I've had two breast enlargements. The first in 1998 as I wanted bigger boobs so I didn't always have to wear a bra and looked a bit more 'womanly' as I had a very boyish straight up and down skinny figure. I went from a 34A to a 34C/D. Then I had two more children and put on some weight, and went up to a 36DD/E. Then in 2008 I decided I wanted to go bigger and went to a 36G/GG cup. Although that sounds huge, and they do look on the large side, they certainly don't look like some sort of huge comedy boobs, although I appreciate most women wouldn't want to go to that size.

Absolutely no-one knows I have had them done, they are extremely natural looking and on the firm side but natural feeling too. I have had no problems and after the 2008 op I didn't even take any pain killers and managed an hours plane journey home just fine. I resumed normal life right away no problems, but don't work. I do have three children, 4 dogs and numerous other animals though.

I have also had a tummy tuck and some lipo done at the same time, in 2008 also, a few months prior to my second breast enlargement.

I am really just a normal person, no hang ups about my appearance, just wanted to improve on it/make some adjustments. I think those who do have real hang ups are the ones who are never happy with the results.

See several surgeons, shop around and don't be afraid to ask questions about their experience. Join cosmetic surgery specific forums and plenty of people post pictures of their results and what surgeon they used. What one person is happy with, you might not be and vice versa. Make sure you ask about aftercare, what will happen if you are not happy with the results but the surgeon is, what realistic results you can expect etc what possible problems can occur, what the surgeons re-op rate is.

Implants these days also generally do not need replacing unles there is a problem with them.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed their comments. I promise to report back if I go for it.
Midori - that's the thing isn't it - when you have no boobs, you actually have to wear a bra to have any shape at all...

A good friend of mine is a cosmetic surgeon (both NHS and private) in north and west London. I haven't had anything done but you can contact him here if you are interested. He is very well qualified and experienced, I know he does boobs all the time!

pictureme · 09/11/2010 23:29

Hi. I had a breast augmentation 2 years ago and it was the best things I've ever done for myself.
After kids I too was an AA cup, i was very depressed (that's another story) and wanted to feel feminine again. I'd never had much in the breast department before having children and always wished I had bigger ones. I loved my baby boobs so much and having them made me realise what I'd been missing!
A friend of mine had had an augmentation and was thrilled with the results so I went to see the same surgeon. He was fantastic, he only works one day a week on cosmetic work and the rest of the time reconstructs cancer patients.
So after A LOT of thought I went for it and at 38 I'm the happiest I've ever been with my body.
It was painful, and I have had some loss of sensation but they look absolutely natural, perfect in fact. The scars are gone now too!

Before I had them done I was reading dozen of forum discussions about them and was grateful I had a friend to talk to that had been through it. Anyway, I'm happy to chat if anyone does have any questions. :)
