Hi
Im on day 3 and have nearly finished listening to the Allan Carr book. I’ve read various versions of it and it didn’t resonate but I have listened to the audiobook, did a week on patches, had a night of wine and smoking and now have been cold turkey for 3 days with minimal cravings! It’s interesting and wound love to hear others experiences with it.

I had already decided to give up, read it, and gave up. It took me a month to realise that I hadn't thought about smoking for a day. Keep away from other smokers, especially around alcohol.

However, five years later I ended up with a partner who smoked and started again. I've given up again now for two years. The thing to remember is that you are never a non-smoker, always an ex-smoker.

TheMauveTiger · 12/08/2024 21:29

I did the day course. Worked for me and I haven't smoked since. - it was almost too easy at first I didn't really feel like anything was different. But I've never had, or wanted, a cigarette since. About 20 years now.

QueenBitch666 · 12/08/2024 21:30

I was a 20 a day girl. Read the book, I'd stopped smoking by the end of it. Not had a craving for a fag since. I didn't use any stop smoking adjuncts

Onekidnoclue · 12/08/2024 21:30

Yes. He’s wonderful. It’s basically brainwashing but in a good way. I now pity smokers! Good luck.

clouise30 · 12/08/2024 21:31

Read the book in the bath in basically one go. Quit the next day and haven't even had a puff since! It'll be 5 years this October! Good luck 😊

LaWench · 12/08/2024 21:33

It didn't work for me but I enjoyed the book. Particularly the bit about comparing smoking to wearing tight shoes and the relief of taking them off. Hypno also didnt work but I'm a stubborn bloody minded individual who wasn't 100% ready. I switched to vaping and eventually quit that when I was ready. I'd just had enough of the faff in the end.

Walkingtheplank · 12/08/2024 21:36

I read the book over a weekend in 2001 and have not smoked since.

I still love the smell of cigarette smoke but never tempted to have one.

AdmittowearingCrocs · 12/08/2024 21:37

Incidentally, Allan Carr died of lung Cancer poor chap

HowardTJMoon · 12/08/2024 21:41

Yup, it did it for me. It's not a well-written book and I suspect you could fit the actual useful stuff in a pamphlet. On the other hand I read it in 2007 and haven't smoked since. The first week or two was a bit of a rollercoaster but re-reading the book definitely helped.

gmgnts · 12/08/2024 21:43

He did it for me in 1989! I read and re-read the book, went to bed clutching it, and started reading again as soon as I woke up. I took it to work with me, to read in my breaks, and read it as soon as I got home. It took about a week of constant reading, then I was free of cigarettes for ever. I had been very heavily addicted and desperate to stop, so it was a huge relief for me. Thank you, Allan Carr!

TheActualDuck · 12/08/2024 21:43

Around eight years ago I read his 'Easy way to Stop Smoking' and thought 'that's interesting' but I carried on smoking.
A few weeks later I read his 'Easy Way to stop Smoking Permanently' and stopped smoking halfway through the book.
I haven't even had a drag of a cigarette since as that would then make me a smoker and I'm a non smoker (I never call myself an ex smoker) if that makes sense. I agree with pp that it's brainwashing.
I also believe I haven't given up or quit anything as that would mean something is missing from my life, I've merely stopped doing something.

Uppitywoman · 12/08/2024 21:43

Yes! I smoked for about 35yrs. I tried everything else and then got the audio version of one of his books. The one for women though. I stopped at the end of the audio book, 3yrs ago, and never smoked since. No cravings, no niggles and definitely no temptation. Good luck! 🤞

3luckystars · 12/08/2024 21:44

Yes me!!!

Same! Right down to the year, I wanted to be done before I turned 30.

twilightcafe · 12/08/2024 21:45

Yep. Used the book in 2004. Haven't smoked a single cigarette since, and have no desire to either.

jelly79 · 12/08/2024 21:45

Yes! 12 years ago! Felt easy as I feel like I've never smoked.

GalacticTowelMaster · 12/08/2024 21:45

Worked for me, did find it very annoying and repetitive but it still worked.

Choux · 12/08/2024 21:51

I gave up after reading Chapter 1 about 15 years ago. It was indeed very repetitive and I didn't want to read the whole book but did want to give up. Chapter 1 was enough to show me I ought to just stop.

honeyfox · 12/08/2024 21:55

I was off them a year after reading it in 2001, no withdrawal symptoms.

Went back on them summer 2002 while completing a v stressful masters with a colleague who tempted me into smoking again.

I haven't smoked full time now in twenty years but still smoke a couple of evenings a week and when I have a drink.

It's still the best anti smoking device I've ever used.

Oldfatandfrumpy · 12/08/2024 22:07

Yep, went from 15 a day to none by the end of the book

Walkingtheplank · 12/08/2024 22:20

Ha, ha - 30 was my goal too!

HavingABitOfAMare · 12/08/2024 22:22

I found the self congratulatory back patting in the first few pages, intensely irritating but managed to read to the end.

I then gave up about 3 years later.

MoonlightMedicine · 12/08/2024 22:26

Yes I quit. It was my 7th try, nothing else worked. Been a non smoker now for 18 years and would NEVER smoke now. Amazing book.

Hollydays · 12/08/2024 22:36

Yes, I read the book about 20 years ago and stopped after reading. I really wanted to give up and had stoped and started several times before. Hardest thing I ever did but still glad I did it.

ErnestTheBavarian · 12/08/2024 22:37

I used his book to quit booze. it was great. Never drank since. Have given up smoking via the getting pg method, booze via Allen Carr method. But nothing seems to work with sugar, sadly. Unless anyone has a magic wand. I think AC did a book on quiting sugar, which I probably read, but without success. Good luck. His booze book really helped.
