Grim. I was thinking of taking up vaping after being off fags for 20 years but this is a timely reminder.

Don't go back to cigarettes though. Much worse.

YesQueen · 24/08/2019 10:55

Possibly a duff batch of liquid, or mixing their own and getting it wrong or vaping stuff not meant to be vaped. I don't think this is from people using a regulated device and e liquid

Sunshineinwinter · 24/08/2019 10:57

YesQueen do you think?

It's horrible poor man. It has just sent my head wild! I could not stay of the fags without my vape Sad

It says in the article it’s from cannabis oil.

Mummoomoocow · 24/08/2019 10:59

Sorry, I assumed that was the bbc link. Forget sky news if you have anxiety fgs

MeanMrMustardSeed · 24/08/2019 11:01

The long term effects of vaping are unknown. I’d be weaning myself off it over the next few months and start afresh without anything next year.

Sunshineinwinter · 24/08/2019 11:03

I have read loads of different reports lol can't help myself Hmm
BBC, sky news, metro !!

Reminder to self: must not Google ffs !

Put it in context

Millions killed by cigarettes
One killed by vaping

I'd recommend chamois tablets over vaping anyway. They stopped me smoking 3 years ago and I've never looked back. Easy to stop and no withdrawal or cravings. Your gp can prescribe them.

YesQueen · 24/08/2019 11:09

Go and read the cancer research stuff. And the public health England Smile

BoomyBooms · 24/08/2019 15:42

  1. approx 80,000 people die every year in the UK due to smoking related illness. Whereas 1 person has died due to vaping.
  2. most people who vape used to smoke, so he could have died from a smoking related illness and it has not been reported accurately in the press.
  3. vaping carries 95% less risk than cigarettes
  4. the uk has.implemented the EU tobacco products directive which regulates the manufacture and sale of vaping devices in the uk, I do not know whether the US has done this so it's not impossible he was is my a faulty or otherwise dangerous device

In short, you've done FANTASTIC stopping smoking, switching to vaping is tonnes better for your health. Well done and keep it up!! If later on you choose to quit vaping then that might help you feel even more confident. Flowers

pilotedgrey · 24/08/2019 15:43

I think you need to see it in context. 1 vaping death, how many cigarette deaths??

I don’t really like this thread as just the OP may put smokers off vaping? I hope not anyway as even if there are risks, much better to vape than smoke

pilotedgrey · 24/08/2019 15:44

@Sunshineinwinter OP, don’t go back to cigarettes, please think of it in context! You’ve done so well alreadySmile

Sunshineinwinter · 24/08/2019 16:08

Aw thanks for the replies.
Didn't want to put anyone off from vaping as it has been a life saver for me.

It's counterfeit THC cartridges bought from pop-up shops and the like causing the issue, not that you'd know by most of the shocking media coverage.
Nothing to do with vaping as we know it.

PencilsInSpace · 07/09/2019 10:47

There's some good info on Michael Siegel's blog for those who are worried about this very badly reported issue:

Latest reactions here https://www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-paper-and-commentary-on-recent-cases-of-harm-through-vaping-in-the-us/ , expert takes on things include "These cases are worrying and need investigating, but advice from all official bodies in the UK is that it is always preferable to vape than to smoke. Today’s reports should not change that advice." and "The mystery seems to have been resolved now, with cases being traced to a contaminated marijuana extract. Although the scare is being used to put smokers off switching from cigarettes to much less risky vaping, it has nothing to do with e-cigarettes as they are normally used in this country."
Don't use illicit blackmarket drugs and you'll be fine.

yellowallpaper · 12/10/2019 11:47

It's not clear what causes the deaths and pneumonia but these are in America not here. U.K. is highly regulated and the ingredients are in much lower doses. They are much safer with no short term effects. Long term no one knows, but if used to quit smoking, very safe.

What appears to be happening with these cases in America is that some of the ingredients have lipids (fats) in them (not in the U.K.). Fats should never be inhaled into the lungs and cause a serious pneumonia. This can lead to death. The cannabis vaping is especially dangerous as they are both oils and a complicated chemical makeup.

So don't worry

TooTrueToBeGood · 12/10/2019 12:00

The deaths have got nothing to do with regular vaping whatsoever. Sadly, the incredibly powerful lobbying forces who have been trying to stop vaping since it started (e.g. those working for big pharma and big tobacco) have been given a massive propoganda boost. Don't fall for it. Look at the facts - the demographics of the victims, the now accepted common factor that they were all using vaping devices to ingest THC or other drugs. More importantly, the fact that there has been a series of sudden deaths in a very short space of time yet vaping has been around for over 10 years and you'll struggle to find credible confirmed instances of vaping-related illnesses, far less fatalities.

Everything points to the deaths being caused by some contaminant in the THC product they were vaping. My guess would be whatever solvent was used to extract the THC from cannabis.
