I'm trying to give up smoking for some time, with no luck, I enjoy smoking, hate the smell, every time when I try to stop I get a bit anxious on edge, I really need to stop especially that we are trying for a baby. Please advise

Sun chaser it would go back to the vaping. We're you using tobacco flavours? I failed with those but as soon as I changed to mint/menthol based flavours it was easy. After years and years of failing to stop vaping has been a revelation.

Sunchaser30 · 04/03/2015 09:41

Yes I used tobacco flavours, but this vaping aren't unhealthy as well?

Sunchaser the technology used for vaping has changed an awful lot over the last couple of years. I tried with cigalikes (the ones that look like fags with disposable cartridges) & failed miserably first time, then only succeeded in cutting down on my second attempt. As soon as I changed to a decent tank system I was down to 2 a day and have now been fag free for over a year.

The main health issues with cigarettes are the combustion products created by burning the tobacco. Vaping doesn't burn anything and only contains pure pharmaceutical grade liquids so no leaves to burn & produce nasty things that are harmful to the health. Nicotine in itself isn't harmful unless you ingest VERY large amounts (e.g. drink high nicotine content liquid) - the amounts absorbed by even the most dedicated vaper is a fraction of a harmful dose.

The other excellent thing about vaping (apart from the fact that you and your house stop smelling like an ashtray and of course the health benefits) is that you can cut down the percentage of nicotine without going into withdrawal! After quite a short time I went from a high nicotine content liquid to an absolutely minimal one.

Sunchaser, try Allen Carrs books for quitting.

Won't work for all but did for me and many others I know. They have clinics as well, all his methods come with a money back guarantee!

PacificDogwood · 06/03/2015 19:45

Have you ever tried several methods together? So, a patch to give you a constant supply of nicotine, something to give you a quick 'hit' like gum or nasal spray or lozenge AND something to inhale (vaping included)?

Have you ever been to a smoking cessation support clinic? There's lots of them about - it may be worthwhile asking your GP or surgery about them.

What's the longest you've ever gone without smoking? What made you pick up a cigarette again? - you don't have to answer here, but think about that and what you could do the next time when you are tempted Smile
Are you a stress/boredom/after dinner/with alcohol smoker? What are you going to do with next time are stressed/bored/had a nice meal/are out with mates?

Many many most smokers have more than one or 5 attempts before they quit for good. Use the previous unsuccessful attempts to try and figure out what you can tweak this time to make the crucial difference for you.

I quit at the start of Dec, been smoking for nearly 20yrs Shock at how old I am. Vaping has worked for me, I like fruit flavours.

I hope you find the thing that works for you.

Sunchaser30 · 10/03/2015 16:16

Thank you all for your support and advice I just bought vaping and will try again, hope this time will work.

Good luck, a lot of people dual fuel for a while. Just look at each cigarette that you don't smoke as a small victory. You'll get there.

This forum is fab and there's loads of great info on youtube too.

Patient and courage and alternative. All that simple.

Wadingthroughsoup · 25/03/2015 19:19

Hope it's working out ok OP.

I smoked for 21 years (except for 2 years when I was pregnant/bfing).

I tried to give up. I tried patches and various other types of NRT. I had hypnosis twice. I read Allen Carr countless times. I read Gillian Riley. I used the NHS Stop Smoking service. I took Champix. I rarely got beyond 3 smoke free days. Suffice to say, I was a very committed smoker indeed.

I decided to try vaping a couple of years ago, but had several false starts. Like a PP, I thought that I would really want a tobacco flavour- but it didn't hit the spot for me.

A couple of weeks ago I decided I needed to give it another go. I picked a date and went for it. For the first few days, I wore a (stage 2) nicotine patch and vaped too. I think that's probably not recommended as there's no way of measuring how much nicotine you're getting, but it worked well for me (thought I was utterly WIRED on nicotine). Then I dispensed with the patches a few days in and I haven't looked back. I'm using lots of lovely flavours- no tobacco ones.

It's only 10 days since I last smoked, so it's still early days but I just can't imagine smoking again- I feel a level of confidence I have never had before in previous quitting attempts. I don't miss smoking at all. When I go into shops and see my regular brand of tobacco behind the counter I feel...nothing.

My plan is to gradually reduce the nicotine in my ecig (I am already down to a pretty low strength) and eventually use nicotine-free juices. But if I stay with the nicotine long-term, it won't be the end of the world as I'm convinced it has to be less dangerous than smoking cigarettes.

Good luck with whatever you decide, but as you can see, vaping has worked wonders for many of us here- it just might take a few false starts til you get a taste for it.
