Hi Everyone, I am new to this site and wondered if anyone is currently/about to give up with the Allen Carr book. My give up day is tomorrow and I'm half way through the book (only started it today) anyway, if anyone has any plans to do the same or advice if you have given up it would be greatly appreciated.

I gave up 4 years ago with Allen Carr, it worked like a dream. Don't be scared!

Monica1969 · 04/01/2015 16:09

Hi Eric, he says to only give up once you have read the book completely, I've not read anything yet that I don't already know and I'm waiting for the trigger that's going to help me benefit from reading it.
I am scared, in fact I'm frightened to death, especially the routine cigarettes like with my coffee in a morning then in my car to/from work plus the agitation. I really want to do this and I should expect it to be difficult.

I was scared too! But trust the process. By the last page you will want to stop!

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 04/01/2015 17:04

It's not difficult by the way Smile

Monica1969 · 04/01/2015 17:22

It really is a scary thought knowing I won't be able to have one in the morning with coffee before I go to work.
I'm still reading away, I'm on chapter 33 of 41, I do want this, I really do, I'm not going to use any NRT however I have got an ecig with nicotine free liquid just in case.

Good luck. I tried it but didn't work for me. Pleased to say I've been quit 3 months now after taking Champix. Only thing that worked in 15 years!

whojamaflip · 04/01/2015 17:31

It works - packed up just over 2 years ago using the book.......did have to read it twice though - first time got half way and chickened out then tried again about 6 months later and managed to get to the end and quit.

I must admit it wasn't an easy read but I think that was more down to the fact that I was scared of life without my cigs and the excuse to get a bit of time out from real life.

Tbh it's been so easy and I wish I had done it years ago.

Good luck

Monica1969 · 04/01/2015 17:31

Hi, thanks for the good luck wishes, I've tried Champix and that didn't work for me, I guess there's one thing out there for everyone if looking.
Well done for the 3 months you have done, that's fantastic, I hope you feel better for it too.

You say it was easy Whojamaflip, what made it easy for you? What got you through? Nothing has done it for me as yet in the book, I know I want to give up anyway but I assumed there was some revelation that flipped the switch in the book lol

It worked for me. You have to turn it around so you think "thank god I'm not a slave to that morning cigarette". Imagine not having to have it (because you're addicted) rather than feeling you're missing out.

I spent a lot of time smoking out of windows, or in the cold. People tutting around me if I smoked outside. You have to turn your thinking around to be so glad you are FREE rather than OMG I'm really going to miss it.

Don't start until you really feel ready. I read the book twice.

thornrose · 04/01/2015 17:40

You have to realise you are currently a slave to the cigarettes. The part about having 25 minutes before your body starts to crave the next one. (Not sure I have that right, it's been a few years!)

Sorry Blush I'll stop now.

Monica1969 · 04/01/2015 17:43

Good analogy of the 'morning cigarette' thornrose, it's a good way of turning it around. I do really want to quit, my teenagers hate it, it's too expensive and I'm not ready to die.
I'm about to read the instructions in this chapter so fingers crossed :-)

Good luck!

whojamaflip · 04/01/2015 18:25

It was easy in the end although if someone had said to me at the start if the book that I could go from being a 30 a day smoker to nothing without craving or bad moods etc I would have laughed in their face!

I finished the book and went out to a friends for a few drinks - hadn't at that point given up so smoked and drank what I wanted that night - ended up at 2am in October drinking red wine and smoking embassy out side in minus 3 degrees without a coat!

Remember thinking to myself that I ought to be locked up!

Anyway woke up the next day with a hangover and that thick mucus feeling in my throat from smoking too much - reached for my fags and promptly dived to the bathroom and threw up!

For the next week or so I felt really sick every time I thought about lighting up - no idea why just did and 2 years down line still feel sick if I even smell cigarette smoke.

That's what I mean by it was easy - it was almost like a switch had been thrown in my brain - no cravings nothing ignores 2 stone extra weight I've put on

whojamaflip · 04/01/2015 18:26

Oh and I read the book thinking to myself that I would be the one it didn't work on! Grin

FuckyNell · 04/01/2015 18:31

Don't say 'giving up'

Say 'stopping' instead. Giving up implies you will be depriving yourself, whereas the opposite is true.

You won't need luck btw, if you're ready. It's an excellent book and it worked for me almost 5 years ago

Monica1969 · 04/01/2015 18:47

Well I have now finished the book and I do feel im looking forward to 'stopping' thanks FuckyNell, I will get up tomorrow excited that I am an ex smoker, I have 4 left in my packet and no emergencies. Luckily no one at work smokes however they also don't understand how hard it is to fight these monsters but I'm determined to do this.

Worked like a dream for me. He makes you see that stopping smoking is something to be excited about rather than fearful of.

Monica1969 · 04/01/2015 19:51

I agree squoosh :-)

I've read it a few times but haven't been ready. I quit last year for 3 months but I have now been a non smoker for almost 36 hours Grin and I do actually feel great about it.

Acknowledge the cravings, see them for what they are and remember how great it is to be free!

lessthanBeau · 02/02/2015 16:39

coming up to 7 years as a non smoker, I'll recommend Allen Carr to anyone wanting to stop good luck.
