Vaping and Insomnia?

Hi everyone Smile

I bought my first e cigarette yesterday and so far am loving it! I always used to have to go outside into the cold for a fag but now I can puff away to my heart's content in the comfort of my own home.

I had my last proper cigarette yesterday morning. I actually bought my e cig on a spur of the moment thing in town yesterday, I had run out of fags and was going to buy another packet when I passed a vapour days shop and bought one of those instead. I had tried unsuccessfully to quit smoking several times this year, using various nicotine replacement therapies.

Anyhow, sorry I'm rambling - I'll get to my point! - last night I could not get to sleep until after 6am. I was wide awake last night like I had drunk 3 pint of coffee. Is this connected to vaping? Anyone else have experience of this?

No advice but yes, absolutely terrible insomnia at first. It settled down but if I use it a lot late at night it comes back. Also headaches but often when I've been using it too much.

Not an un-common side effect, and like most of them it passes off quite quickly. It's a matter of your body getting used as much to the things it isn't getting any more as anything else, and it takes a while to fully acclimatise it.

Also, another question. Seeing as the cartridges of nicotine/flavours come in different strengths, is there a rule of thumb to work out how many puffs constitute the equivalent to a "normal" cigarette. I have started on 12mg strength. I've been puffing away probably at the same amount that I would smoke fags but am not sure whether I am actually now potentially smoking more than I did before. I.e could I be smoking, like 50 fags?

One rule of thumb I've heard is that for liquid users (rather than pre-filled cartridges) a 20 a day smoker should usually start on 18mg liquid, and assume they will get through roughly 20ml a week.

But as Polter says, nicotine is absorbed very differently into the body with vaping so you can't really assume if your fags were 12mg (typical medium to strong for fags) then your liquid should be 12mg (that's the lower end of medium). Another thing to bear in mind is that when you light up a fag you smoke the whole thing in one go, whereas with e-cigs you are more likely to take fewer puffs but more frequently.

Whichever way you look at it, there's no chance it can be the same as smoking ANY fags - none of the 4000 or so toxins you get from cigarette smoke just nicotine. Which in itself isn't harmful unless you drink loads - you'd be sick before you could vape enough to cause any harm at all.
