LF have started a vaping mag! here

Don't know how interested people are in the political side, but the first story about the FDA is quite worrying. We need to stop that happening in Europe.

NOT the first story - that's good news, but we all knew what the researchers have found so it's not really news to us. Good to have it confirmed though.

No, the concerning one is the last one (5th?) about the FDA wanting to classify ecigs as tobacco products. Again, most of us knew that they wanted to.

That's brilliant, I like a newsletter Smile

Yes what's happening in the US is scary. What happens there will have a knock-on effect over here (and in the rest of the world). The closing date for comments to the FDA was Aug 8th so not much point worrying about it now. Clive Bates's submission was excellent, let's hope they got more than a few like that.

If you are in the mood for Doing Something and have already signed the EFVI it's worth adding your comments to this letter to WHO who are also threatening drastic controls on vaping.

Ah thanks, Plenty. I signed the EFVI a while ago, and a few other things which were proliferating at the time, but I've not seen the WHO thing, so I'll look now.

It's quite interesting that the WHO have said that in the case of ebola it is ethical to allow an untested drug to be used. Clearly, the situation is not the same as we all started smoking by making a decision ourselves, no matter the circumstances (I was beaten into it by my friend, but I could have continued to say no; I decided that having a fag when she offered them was better than being beaten up if I refused - it was still a choice I made) and no one chooses to have ebola.

However, in the case of a) facing almost certain death, as against b) using a substitute which is clearly less terminal but about which little is known; well there's a kind of parallel there isn't there?

Or am I just being stupid? I often am, so please don't hesitate to tell me it's a ludicrous comparison!

No you make a very good point and it's not the job of the who to judge people they are supposed to be purely concerned with improving people's health.

The recent edition took me to Clive Bates, and his response to the WHO ignorance and befuddledness.

A nice quote from Clive about ecig companies in the comments is "these companies have been utterly gutless and need to start fighting their regulatory corner. They need to band together and start putting time and money into a serious PR and a decent trade associations. They are just relying on dedicated vapers to do it for them.

"In particular the Chinese manufacturers need to make representations to the Chinese government and inform them that WHO is in the business of destroying an especially valuable export business – in both financial and public health terms."

I completely agree.
