I want to stop without substitutes. But how?

I was a non smoker for 16 years, having given up cold turkey using the Alan Carr method. I can't afford to go to one of the workshops now.

When I divorced three years ago I reached for the fags and I'm still smoking. I hate it, hate the smell, hate how I feel, hate that fitness is suffering, hate that I regularly have to scrub my fingers, hate the fact that dating is so much more difficult because many guys won't date a smoker, hate that my DD worries about me…….Sad

I don't want nicotine substitutes or drugs. Has anyone any ideas/support/advice as to how I can just kick it?

The first time I gave up, I used hypnotherapy. One session to talk about why I wanted to give up and then one of actual hypnotism.
It worked, for nearly nine years but then I started again.
My dr has.recommended that I read Alan Carrs stop smoking for good, which I am going to do, just need to get hold of a copy.

Many people (like Belle above) have successfully given up using the Allen Carr method just by reading the book, and not had to go to classes. If that worked for you before, it may well be food for you again.

Something to consider is which aspect of smoking you find the hardest to give up - is it the nicotine itself, or the habit? Because if it's the habit aspects, think about substitutes for that - I'm not just talking about vaping zero nicotine, but things like the "dummy cigarette" that was very popular in the US a few years back, or any other method that keeps the hands busy like knitting or crochet!

There's a great book by Kelly McGonnigal called Maximum Willpower. A really terrible title, but it's all about the neuroscience of choice and has lots of simple experiments you can try with whatever you're trying to stop doing (like smoking or eating crap) or start doing (like taking exercise). Can't recommend it highly enough.

Think I can feel a trip to the library coming on!

Yes me too, or I might see what's available on kindle.

I know why I smoke. It's the nicotine addiction and all the psychological stuff just masks that.
