Do E Cigs smell like cigarettes?

My neighbour has just moved out, I will call him John (not his real name). My landlord owns the property next door as well as the one I live in.

I bumped into the landlord today, who had come around to clean up and he asked me to go into next door and tell him if I could smell anything. I could smell cigarettes very strongly.

The landlord asked me if I knew whether John smoked, and I told him that John had mentioned to me that he smoked e cigs. The landlord said that he was having a dispute with John because he wanted to retain some of the deposit to repaint and replace the carpet due to the smell, but John is demanding his full deposit back because he says that he didn't smoke in the property, and that he wasn't told that he could not use the e cig, only that he couldn't smoke.

The cigarette smell was very evident, I smelt it myself. Is it possible that the smell came from the e cig, or is he lying and he must have smoked in there?

Did john ever smoke cigarettes before e-cigs? Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. Did you SEE him smoke cigarettes? How long did he live there? Did he move in before you or after you? Was John being truthful about only using e-cigs? Was John being truthful about not smoking as per tenancy agreement? Did he have any regular visitors who smoked? Did the previous tenant smoke? Lots of unanswered questions, but a lot of assumptions that he did smoke cigarettes! Unless you know all the answers, don't presume anything!

Wakey wakey antismoker111! I know you love bumping old threads but you already bumped this one back in June Grin

(and no, ecigs still don't smell like fags, even a month later. Fancy that!)

antismoker111 · 12/07/2014 16:04

The thread is still alive so rights to comment not allowed then (or just by you?)

Here we go again....
Why resurrect it again?

No-one is saying you CAN'T post here antismoker111, just noting that your posts seem a little pointless. You've made it absolutely clear you equate vaping with smoking, which you're dead against, and won't listen to anything people say to the contrary.

You've also made it clear that you and your friend somehow manage to smell combusted tobacco from a device that doesn't actually burn anything and doesn't contain tobacco leaf, or have any tobacco type flavourings in it - many times now. I'm sorry that you have a health problem that makes you react to so many things in normal daily life, but to lambast people on a forum topic that is specifically trying to support people who are GIVING UP smoking isn't all that constructive for anyone.

antismoker111 · 12/07/2014 17:26

Have you reacted to other people who think all forms of smoking should be banned like you do to me?? There are several people on other mumsnet sites who do not want either too. Have a go at them instead of ganging up on someone who would like to not have so many health issues, many because of certain smells that I dont seem able to avoid even when in NO SMOKING areas, incidentally several places include e-cigs in this ruling.

Vaping isn't smoking. There is no smoke. You know this. We've done this.

Individual premises are currently at liberty to ban vaping if they want to. If you don't like it, go to places where it is banned.

If you want a legal, national ban on vaping you need a bit of evidence that it is harmful. This is because we don't live in the sort of country that just bans things for the sake of it. Feel free to move somewhere more repressive if that would suit you. There is no evidence that vaping is harmful to those who vape, let alone those around them. Therefore there are no grounds to ban it.

ASH disagree with you:

ASH Wales recognise the growing use of electronic cigarettes across the UK. According to the current evidence base, many of those who are motivated to try e-cigarettes do so out of a desire to either minimise their tobacco use or quit using tobacco entirely. Although safety concerns about the devices exist, and we still lack information about the long-term effects of using e-cigarettes, we should be wary of taking steps that could undermine those who are using them as a means of protecting themselves from the harms attributable to tobacco. We support regulations of e-cigarettes covering the efficacy and quality of the devices to ensure public safety.

To date, we can see no suggestion in the existing evidence base that would support an outright ban on e-cigarettes. ASH Wales recommends that premises continue to be allowed to make decisions for themselves on whether or not to permit the use of e-cigarettes, although we recognise that there may be environments where the use of these devices is inappropriate.

Why don't you take it up with them?

This. As I said above, this is an area specifically aimed at helping people who want to stop smoking. Anyone who comes here with constructive suggestions are more than welcome - however anyone who comes here specifically to denigrate a method that is proving to be the most effective way of stopping smoking should expect to be criticised.

Hi So we have a new employee in the office the only one that smokes and I've noticed the office aroma has changed from a pleasant perfume to an stale smell, this newbie sits vaporizing all day, I have considered talking to my boss about it but so I need to be sure if it's the vaporizing or something else!! can anyone help do E-Cigarettes give off a smell and is this harmful to our lungs? Hmm Confused

I know this is old, but I am using the Vuse ecig and it definitely smells like cigarettes. And it clings! It doesn't disappear. That is why I Googled if they smell, I though it wasn't supposed to linger, and I came here.
