Battery and charger safety

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 10/05/2014 18:56

I thought I'd share this really useful advice on battery charging safety because it's something that has long confused me, especially when it comes to using a wall charger.

The comments are well worth reading too.

Thanks for linking that Plenty, some good advice there. I tend to clean both the battery terminal and the clearo where it fits on to the battery quite often - surprising how much black gunk I get off sometimes.

Raia · 13/05/2014 12:39

That really is useful - I was wondering what the deal was about battery safety so this is v timely. Thank you Plenty!

An on line mate told me he has bought an electronic cigarette battery charging bag. Keeps the fire contained, if the battery explodes. Unsure of where to buy it though yet. I will ask him tomorrow.

magimedi · 13/05/2014 20:03

Sole ecigward do a battery charging bag:

www.ecigwizard.com/accessories/bc/li-po-safe-charging-bag.html

I don't have one, but I don't charge over night or leave them charging if I'm out.

SoleSource · 13/05/2014 20:17

Thank you Magi

I will use mine when I am here. Safety first.

Shonajay · 14/05/2014 09:35

I never leave them charging either, heard too many scare stories.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/05/2014 20:29

They're actually no more likely to go off than phones, laptops etc. it's just those things aren't considered so newsworthy.

Looking at recent cases, they all seem to be those little cig-alike chargers and I think in a lot of cases they are not so much chargers as adapters - they don't adjust down the amps and volts - then people attach an ego (which they are not designed for) in one end and a high amp charger in the other ...

I only ever charge when at home so I can take it off charge as soon as its done. Would never leave one overnight.

MaggieMcGill · 24/05/2014 14:00

My mum got quite a nasty burn last week from her ecig. She woke through the night after hearing hissing from her bedside cabinet. She had a brand new evod copy from FT. By the time she woke up and realised it was on it was extremely hot when she tried to take the clearo off. Even without the clearo it still wouldn't go off, pretty scary and at first I didn't believe her but then I seen it. I've bought us both a bag for charging now :) ps how does everyone else dispose of duff batteries?

OohQuack · 06/06/2014 19:14

Roughly how longs it take to charge your mvp v2 with the USB in a pc? The book says the light turns off when it's full, mines been on for 7 hrs

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 06/06/2014 19:35

I never charge mine through a pc, I use a wall charger. Mine takes around 5 hours I think but I have never timed it. It will take a lot longer through a PC. This is the down side of huge batteries, they take a long while to charge.

I'm putting one on to charge now so will report back.

Tut the only charger I've got is an e-cigs wall plug whichis only 500amp tthat's practically the same as just using a USB isn't it? I'm not plugging my phone charger in it I'm scared of setting fire to stuff

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 06/06/2014 21:44

500amp? Shock fuuuck! I'm assuming you mean 500 ma (milliamps).

I don't know how that compares to a pc usb but there is another possible reason to use a wall charger - rumour has it that it can fuck up your computer. When I was charging off my laptop I got quite a few blue screen crashes. This could be a complete coincidence - the lappy is very ancient and I'm always mildly surprised it still fires up at all, but I have seen a lot of people recommend that you don't charge off a computer if possible (this might only apply to laptops, I don't know - I might see if I can formulate a coherent question for the geeky stuff topic on this)

I've done a lot of reading around since I first read the ecita advice. Lots of people dispute it. What I have gathered is:

  1. You won't go wrong if you limit your wall plug to 500ma but as long as you are using the correct ecig charger there should be no problem using a higher amp plug. If you are not sure and are at all worried, use a 500ma wall plug.

2) never ever ever ever ever use a cig-alike charger for an ego style battery. All the exploding ecig stories I have seen have been this setup. Cig-alikes have internal circuitry which steps down the current so the chargers they come with are just basically adapters. Egos don't have this circuitry in the battery, they rely on the charger to step down the current. The charger should have an OUTPUT of 500ma and 4.2V

  1. MVPs have internal protective circuitry like cig-alikes, which is why they come with what is basically a USB lead for charging. I charge mine on a 1.5A wall plug and have never had a problem, although being a nervous sort I never leave it unattended.

  2. The very worst set up you could possibly have is apple charger (higher amps than standard) + cig-alike charger + ego battery. That was the setup in the bar explosion.

Further reading here and here.

This is all clear as mud isn't it? If there is one area we need better regulation it is this. All it needs is clearer labelling.

Yes I knew it was 500 somethings milliamp is probably more likely! I've never had a cigalike so won't mix up any wires there. So my best bet sounds like I should just stick the mvp in the wall plug charger. Okidokes

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 07/06/2014 09:05

My MVP took just under 4 hours to charge.

Ok I'm worried now, as despite the warning that came with our ecigs, we always charge overnight as that's the only time we don't vape and we only have one battery each. I'm interested in those charging bags and if they're not stupidly priced I'll probably get a couple.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 19/06/2014 00:39

Get more batteries!

OP posts:
Allergictoironing · 19/06/2014 06:51

and we only have one battery each. - how can you risk that?????? I have 5 batteries (OK a couple of them were purely because they are pretty), and 3 of those are 1300 mAh so last between 1.5 and 2 days. I don't even go to the supermarket without a spare fully charged battery just in case Blush

magimedi · 19/06/2014 08:20

How can you manage with just one battery? My anxiety levels would be through the roof if I didn't always have a spare charged one with me!

Yes - I am addicted to nicotine Grin

OohQuack · 09/08/2014 21:14

Right I'm having a thick hour. I've got many batteries, aspire cf vv, spinner, two long life batteries and two piddly rubbish standard ones, I'm so confused with all the different USB chargers, I need two that will charge all of these, will a standard fast USB charger for about £4 be ok for all of them?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 09/08/2014 23:41

Look for output 4.2v, 500mA - that's standard for any ego style battery. Dont get anything with higher numbers than that. Don't leave unattended and to be extra safe you could get a lipo charging bag.
