Assuming you’re a stepparent and the DC already have parents with PR, why would you?

There's a bit more info here

www.gov.uk/parental-rights-responsibilities/apply-for-parental-responsibility

No idea whether you'd b successful or not

Can you really not think of a scenario where a step parent might want to step up in this way?

Because sometimes parents with PR don't see their kids???

DH did for my two girls and I did for DS.

It’s quite simple (although took time) if there’s no objections - which there wasn’t in our case.

Is the NRP around? Do they/are they likely to object?

Fuckthatguy · 27/07/2023 10:27

Some very defensive responses to a perfectly reasonable question.

I’ll rephrase, what is the context of your question OP?

Hello applying for pr for step parent is not malicious or anything to do with an evil step parent which some are assuming in this thread. Last week our dc went to A&e and they had asked who had pr. in the event of an emergency all parents who have dc on a regular basis would need pr so they can speak on their behalf.

we have been in a very long court process and Cafcass have raised concerns about biological dads ability to make the right decisions for dc safety. They are still in the process of accessing if he should be granted pr in a section 7 report. Biological father has not oppose a step parent pr.

the purpose of this thread is to ask if anyone has applied for a step parent pr and was they successful.

I know someone who did when their partner died. Remaining bio parent hadn't really been in the picture for years and didn't want responsibility. They had to agree though.

For partner read spouse and it was a relationship of many years since the children were quite small. Not sure if that makes any difference.

NellieTheElephant1 · 27/07/2023 10:59

Yes we did this approx 15 years ago. It was quite straightforward from what I remember - both bio parents had to agree and sign the form along with the step parent. It then had to be verified (not the correct legal term lol) by court staff.

Fuckthatguy · 27/07/2023 11:15

Both parents have to agree OP but context is relevant of course. Sounds complicated and I wish you luck for the sake of the children.

Just to put your mind at rest - in an emergency PR isn’t needed.

My DD required emergency surgery after being in a car accident while on a play date. There was no danger of the hospital waiting to treat her until someone with PR was there - in fact they were treating her before I even knew about the accident.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 27/07/2023 17:16

Have Cafcass stated if they’d support the step parent being given PR?

If everyone agrees it’s quite straightforward. It’s only complicated if someone disagrees.

It is also worth seriously thinking about tbt fact that it’s not simply revoked if you were to split up - so they’d still have input. Was one of the things we had flagged to us during the process as apparently a lot of people don’t think about that part.

Honeypot257 · 27/07/2023 18:38

@YetMoreNewBeginnings we are aware dc will still have contact even if we are not together and will still continue being a parental figure. The judge has not order Cafcass to look at step parent pr only for biological father

You’d have to find out their take on it - they might welcome it being done all at the same time, but they may not. I’d say that has to be your first port of call
