What age did your DSC stop believing in the Easter bunny?

I feel I’ve had a step parenting fail!

I was watching a video on Instagram where a mum spoke about slipping up in front of her three year old about the Easter bunny. My 11 year old DSS was next to me and and DSD told me her brother still believed in the Easter bunny! I feel awful and honestly didn’t think he would still believe!!

Never did, mine are 11 now and it was never a thing.

NaturalBae · 10/04/2023 00:22

We never introduced an Easter bunny. Didn’t even know it was a thing. Us parents buy the Easter chocolate for the Easter Egg Hunt and GP’s also give the DC eggs. This year, 8 year old DC chose his first two Easter eggs during a supermarket shop last month.

OhMyCherriePie · 10/04/2023 00:24

You can pay for visits from the ‘Easter bunny’ in my area so it’s definitely a thing!

DidyouNO · 10/04/2023 00:49

I wouldn't worry about it. My kids never did the Easter bunny. I'm not great at lying to my children so we never did Santa well either. No 'magic' was lost and they still have amazing fun these times.

Erm, they’ve never believed in it, we’ve never talked about it - I don’t think I know anyone who has.

So you haven’t. And I don’t really think your DSS can think that - you wouldn’t believe in Fr C at 11 would you?

This! Seriously, no 11 year old believes in the Easter bunny! My youngest is 12, eldest 16, the Easter bunny has never been anything but a story, never a ‘thing to believe in’, just a jokey character they always knew was made up fun. Santa they believed in till about 10 (eldest) and 8 (youngest).

Someone is pulling your leg I think…

When did people start doing the Easter bunny in the UK?

I'm in my 50s and it definitely wasn't a thing when I was a kid. I remember reading an American children's book when I was about 10. It mentioned the Easter bunny and I was a bit confused because I had no idea what that was.

I did Father Christmas with my own daughter (now 20) but just used to hand her an Easter egg on Easter Sunday.
Her friends' parents must have done the same because she never came home from nursery or from school talking about the Easter bunny.

Year 6 11 year old 😂 as I think I said I did think that’s too old to believe in it. Thank you guys!!

Well if it makes you feel better, I didn't know the Easter bunny was now the spring equivalent of Santa and DD (who has never been left anything by this mythical beast) asked me at around 9 if the Easter bunny was real and I scoffed and went "what? No!" And then worked out how things work nowadays.

I did feel bad but I assume she remembered us giving her the eggs for the previous 8 years.

That’s exactly how things were when I grew up eggs from relatives and a roast 😂

I feel like I have somehow missed something when people are going on about the easter bunny, I mean what is even the story? Is there a story? It's not a thing I have ever heard until this year Confused

Neither have I
My kids have heard about the easter bunny but they know the eggs are from family.
My parents never did the easter bunny either.

Minierme · 10/04/2023 03:34

I didn’t realise (until this thread!) that the Easter bunny was a thing children believed in like Father Christmas! …and I have children of my own and worked for nearly two decades as a teacher.

Perhaps it’s because I taught in C of E schools (and friends and family are mostly Christian) but I also never did this as a child (and my family weren’t at all religious).

We had Easter egg hunts and what not of course but never realised some children are told that the Easter bunny puts them there as a real thing.

Spiderysenses · 10/04/2023 05:48

Funnily enough I was talking about this with youngest DD (late teens) and she was saying that the younger kids (upto yr5) that she volunteers with treat the Easter bunny like a summer Santa, there's gifts aswell as eggs and they believe. I was a bit bemused.

wandawaves · 10/04/2023 05:52

Definitely a thing where I live. Most kids believe in Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy.

Barleycat · 10/04/2023 05:56

Wtf is 'believing' in the Easter bunny?

Crazay · 10/04/2023 08:59

Easter bunny has never been a thing in our house or mine growing up, in fact I'd never even really thought about it because I can't think of anyone I know who does either. I didn't think the Easter bunny was like a Santa Claus type thing

aSofaNearYou · 10/04/2023 09:26

DP burst DSS's bubble this year - didn't realise he still believed at 10. Can't be that upset about it tbh because it seemed a bit silly he still believed.

We never had any intention of telling our DDs that it was actually real so it's turned out well that there wasn't that crossover with him still believing, or she'd have been confused this year.

Gooseysgirl · 10/04/2023 09:26

11? Nahhhh!!! If he still believes you've done him a favour! We never did it growing up.. DM called bullshit on it straight away as soon as we asked 😆 I think Santa and tooth fairy was more than enough for her!!!

mahrezzy · 10/04/2023 00:12

My 4 year old utterly believes in the Easter Bunny.

My 4 year old believes in none of that stuff.

She spent December telling me Santa/Father Christmas wasn't real so I had to tell if she wanted presents she needed to not say it bs she mustn't say it to any kid under 7.

Oh and she worked it out herself due to her interest in space, time etc.

thestepmumspacepodcast · 11/04/2023 15:36

don't sweat it OP! x

BumWad · 11/04/2023 15:37

😂

lalaloopyhead · 11/04/2023 15:40

My youngest is 15 so I am probably out of touch with such matters, but the Easter Bunny was never a thing for us at all! Didn't realise that children actually believed it was a real thing....I don't know anyone that does.

Navigatingthroughlife · 11/04/2023 18:37

Thank you lovelies! Xx
