Getting step kids to save?!

My partner and I are taking his two kids to Florida next year. They have no urgency to save and I know how much stuff they’re going to want to buy out there. Has anyone got any advice on how to encourage them to save their Christmas money etc as we don’t have a limitless budget where we can get them everything they want?

This isn't what you asked but they shouldn't buy stuff at the Disney parks or universal studios, because they're an absolute rip off.

They can buy all the Disney stuff in many shops in Orlando... way cheaper. That's what we did when we went.

You can buy a lot of stuff in the Disney shops but you can’t buy some of the more up to date stuff or everything you see in the parks at all.

Both my kids bought a lounge fly Disney bag, they never had any of them in the outlets.
Same with the droids, none in the cheap shops outside Disney.
Interactive wands I never found either in the shops.

The outlets are ok for cheap generic T-shirts, keyrings, teddies, books, pens etc but not for all of it.

Thank you this is exactly what I’m dreading they’re going to want everything 😂

I’d give them their pocket money in dollars from now on 😂 They can’t spend it then!

Hope the exchange rate picks up for you though! It’s terrible recently.

I think OP you have to budget their spending money in to your budget. I’ve been Florida several times and you can either afford to buy them things or you can’t - it’s not cheap.

I can’t imagine saying to my kids ‘were going Disney land - but you’ve got to take your own spending money!’ At their age.

Buying a teddy at Walmart is NOT the same as going in to one of the Disney shops in the park and getting a teddy/bauble/plastic thing …

Your relative probably does Florida on the cheap as they are used to going - but your first time? Be prepared to be ambushed and take a lot of spending money

@Juneyblue I used to LOVE buying things with my own money when I was little! Didn't you?

Also money isn't unlimited - the OP can't budget with money she doesn't have. If the DSCs are getting pocket money and they want stuff then I think it makes sense that they should be given the opportunity to save.

I agree I used to love the freedom of it being my money I had saved

I also used to love buying stuff out of my own money as a child.

Freedom to pick whatever you want as it’s your money instead of asking mum and dad can you have it.

We still bought them stuff on top of their money but it’s nice for them to have there own money too.
