Christmas dinner plans

CornishGem1975 · 19/09/2022 19:41

This year it's our turn to have my DC and my DSC on Boxing Day. Not all are keen on a roast at any time of the year, and certainly don't want a full Christmas dinner two days in a row.

What do you do in this situation? Do you do Christmas dinner on both days?

I don't want to go down the 'party food' route and we have a variety of eaters from the extremely fussy beige food eater to the one that would like the pattern off the china.

Any fun food ideas? We have an Ooni so I was thinking of maybe just pizza but we have that a lot so that might just be a bit meh!

We had a bbq a couple of years ago….it went well.

lunar1 · 19/09/2022 19:51

On Boxing Day a big hit in our house is pulled pork (I make it ahead) bbq chicken drumsticks (in the air fryer) American cornbread muffins and corn on the cob. Pitta bread and salad on the side.

I usually have a house full on Boxing Day and this always goes down well.

We always have salmon en croute with new potatoes and greens on Boxing Day.

DenholmElliot1 · 20/09/2022 09:12

What do YOU want?

AlisonDonut · 20/09/2022 09:19

How are we going to know what your family want to eat?

Ask them or just cook what you want to cook?

CornishGem1975 · 20/09/2022 10:20

Oh DFOD @AlisonDonut Did you even read my post? I wasn't asking people what my family want to eat was I? Did someone piss on your chips today?

@DenholmElliot1 I don't really mind - I love cooking so I'll make anything but would like to do something that's a bit more interesting than frozen spring rolls or pizza.

I think @lunar1 suggestion sounds delicious 😁

gretr · 20/09/2022 10:36

Pizza sounds great, and fun so everyone can put on their own toppings. Just keep it simple, I think it’s more about the time you spend together, so make it as easy as possible.

lunar1 · 20/09/2022 12:18

@countingdowntoholiday, it's so good, and different, and there is always a packet of ham in the fridge for my fussy ds2 and my my niece 🤣

Why the snippy reply ?

I think they are right. Ask them what they would like?

SuperCamp · 20/09/2022 12:35

I would cook something more special than frozen party food and something my family would consider a bit if a feast / treat.

E.g in our family it would be Posh curry dishes, a homemade game pie, salmon en croute, a luxurious fish pie, a rich casserole / Raghu of short ribs…

The key really is what YOUR family would enjoy, and you were very rude to a PP.

properdoughnut · 20/09/2022 12:50

Anything that isn't a roast really. Coronation Turkey. Turkey curry. Ham. Big Massive Lasgane?

TroublesomeTomato · 20/09/2022 20:03

I am cooking either chicken or lamb on Christmas day, and on boxing day (when SD is coming this year) I think I might make giant fancy sausage rolls and veg! Or something en croute.

TroublesomeTomato · 20/09/2022 20:04

We also sometimes do a pie on boxing day, with the leftover meat. So basically.... something a bit easier witha roast but with puff pastry

stepmumspacepodcast · 20/09/2022 22:30

If they all like pizza and you like making it then I’d do pizza!!

low hassle, high happiness! 💐

TwinkleChristmas · 21/09/2022 07:41

I wouldn’t do 2 roasts.

Roast is for Xmas day only.

Id do a pizza night if everyone likes pizza

DebussytoaDiscoBeat · 21/09/2022 12:05

I used to do nut roast and also make individual pies in the shape of stars to keep it festive and serve with roast-dinner style side dishes and trimmings but would make sure they were mostly different to what they'd have had at their mum's (apart from sprouts - it's not Christmas without sprouts!).

Now my DSC are adults and don't need a recreated Christmas Day with us I do a "world buffet" with swedish meatballs, curry, pasta, chow mein, wedges, rice etc and serve up in those heated food servers that often appear in Lidl/Aldi in the weeks running up to Christmas. I home-make most of it ahead and because I use the heated servers I don't have to worry so much about timings. Then we have turkey & stuffing sandwiches and sausage rolls for tea. Always goes down a storm.

Countingdowntodecember · 21/09/2022 12:11

After a couple of years of two Christmas dinners (that no one really wanted), we always had picky Christmas food on Boxing Day at my dad and step mum’s. I always remember it as being lovely and laid back.

If you want a sit down meal and have a variety of tastes, why not order a takeaway? Then everyone can choose something they like and there’s more time for games and Christmas movies 😀

allboysmum3 · 22/09/2022 09:26

You could do a curry night or pizza night (in fact you could buy pizza bases and have everyone make their own) Burgers? Hotdogs?

Manchestermummax3 · 22/09/2022 09:34

Boxing day we always do cold meats, gammon, left over turkey etc. New potatoes, pickled beetroot/onions/eggs salad, pork pies, cheese board.
