Advice from teachers and or doctors

Hello, I have a 6 year old son. For his whole life he has been what we describe as busy. Always on the move - running climbing, jumping. He is very excitable. When I take him to new places people often comment on his levels of activity. Someone suggested that they would have thought he had ADHD, except he is able to concentrate.

What I’m wondering is whether any GPs or teachers have ever encountered this? I’m usually quite happy with his level of physical activity (although it can take him up to two hours to go to sleep at night, which can’t be good) but today we had a doctor’s appointment (about something unrelated) and the consultant paediatrician commented on what a busy boy he is, because he couldn’t keep still. I’m just wondering whether I just need to be firmer with his behaviour, or whether it’s worth looking at strategies to help him sit still, or is it possible to be both hyperactive/ADHD and concentrate on school work? (He does well at school)

He doesn’t get into trouble at school and he can sit still when he has a puzzle, maths-related activity (he loves maths) or reading. But when we’re out and about at appointments, somewhere new or somewhere where it would be appropriate for him to be calm, he isn’t.

Maybe it’s just him, but so many people comment on it I wonder if there is something I’m missing.

Thanks so much
