What the relationship called?

Background: dp and I have been In a very good relationship for over a year and a half, I have two dcs, dd 10 and ds 15. He has one ds 19, we've all formed a very good bond and our ds's in particular are very close.
They were out together one afternoon when my ds went to collect his new glasses, to cut this bit short, he was to young and required dps ds to sign the form. The receptionist then asked them how he knew my ds so she could fill the 'relation' section of the form. This is where it apparently got tricky form them, the receptionist offered up brother or friend before ds explained that he was with his moms boyfriends son. So what I'm asking is, is there a shorter simpler tittle for their relation ship? like step siblings, withought the marriage?

Does it matter? Confused it was a form for picking up glasses. Tick brother, collect glasses, leave shop. Done. It is of no consequence. No-one is going to arrest them for not being precise about their relationship.

I've always called myself a co parent. I do my share of the parenting without having birthed him. But for formal things like that I go with step mum, it's easy and harmless as long as the kids don't mind it means no one has to explain anything

If they're both happy to use the word brother, then use brother. No need to over think it!

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/08/2017 10:17

Brother seems right in that situation. What did they put down in the end?

Sallyssherwood · 02/08/2017 10:26

Sorry I maybe didn't make it clear, it's not really anything to do with the opticians or doing something wrong, i was jut wondering if there was a tittle for that, it's not something I've seen mentioned much.

I guess they're step bothers. Marriage isn't a requirement for using step, certainly not in the real world (though there's a slightly odd obsession by some on MN with not "qualifying" the parents aren't married. Loads of people never get married so if the short hand feels right to everyone then I'd say they're step brothers as their parents are in a relationship. They may choose to drop the step and just be brothers in time to come, which would be nice, so it's just what everyone feels happy with Smile

AnnelovesGilbert, I guess your right, thanks you Smile
