Any dance teachers out there?
Would you allow a student to continue dancing with a torn ACL?

Hell no. Dance parent not teacher here, and no way is that ok. No reputable dance teacher should ever allow training to continue with a ligament injury like that.

stapletonsguitar · 11/03/2026 21:35

I’m not a dance teacher but I’ve had a torn acl - and absolutely not.

Temporaryname158 · 11/03/2026 21:44

No way! Madness and long term damage if that were allowed

taxi4ballet · 11/03/2026 21:53

@Ijustdontknowwhattodo1018 How old is the dance student and what dance style is it?

allmycats · 11/03/2026 22:29

Not at all. Age and type of dance totally irrelevant.

Princesspollyyy · 11/03/2026 22:31

No.

Fluteytooting · 11/03/2026 22:32

Dance teacher here. Absolutely not.

Browniesandcustard · 11/03/2026 23:06

Im currently sat in hospital with my daughter who has had her acl reattached today. Absolutely no way to your question!

Jossse · 11/03/2026 23:12

Absolutely not!!

LoserWinner · 11/03/2026 23:13

Ex dance teacher, had a torn ACL - NO WAY. Without the ACL stabilising the knee, there’s an incredibly high risk of further long term serious damage to the leg and hip.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 11/03/2026 23:14

Absolutely not.

ACL injury is a huge issue in womens sport especially football. Very reckless.

BauhausOfEliott · 11/03/2026 23:17

I’m not a dance teacher but no way should anyone be dancing with an ACL tear. It’s a serious injury and needs very careful rehab. Same with an Achilles tear.

stupididiot12345 · 11/03/2026 23:22

Hang on a minute, no one has asked how old the injury is or the extent of the tear. I’m a physiotherapist and see plenty of patients who may have minor ACL tears who are not for surgical reconstruction. Please be guided by what the professionals have advised

Bananacharmer · 11/03/2026 23:25

No way but you do have to be careful. Even at elite level dancers are often encouraged to perform with serious injuries, it’s a big issue.

SellFridges · 11/03/2026 23:30

I agree that it completely depends on the extent of the tear and the overall knee stability. Perfectly possible to avoid surgery with some tears, and therefore dance on.

MrsAvocet · 12/03/2026 00:03

I'm a sports coach, not a dance teacher (though my DD is so I've spent a lot of time in the dance world) and I don't think there is a black and white answer to this question. An acute, major ligament injury and a pointe class, clearly no. But a gentle body conditioning class after a small tear that's now healing might be ok, beneficial even. I would say that is a question for the injured person's doctor and/or physio to advise on rather than the teacher to make a unilateral decision about. After most injuries a return to any kind of exercise needs to be gradual and follow the advice of a health professional.

Ap90 · 12/03/2026 06:10

Depends on the dr or physio advice, and the dance style/intensity. I exercised on mine up until surgery.

It's really not irrelevant. A talented advanced-level dancer of 15 who's in the middle of auditions for full-time ballet school is going to need way more in the way of hcp intervention than a kid of 6 doing a bit of tap for half an hour once a week.
