Tennis Lesson Costs & Best Way to Start

I’ve loved tennis - especially Wimbledon - for as long as I can remember. I’ve always wanted to play, but never had anyone to go with, so I kept putting it off. Now, at 34, I’m at the point where I’m tired of missing out just because I don’t have someone to join me. My friends and family are all busy with their own lives, so I’ve decided it’s time to go for it on my own.

I’ve found a tennis club nearby and got in touch about lessons. The options are:

  • Group lessons – £20 per session
  • Individual lessons – £50 per hour

With my work shifts, I’d only be able to play once a week most of the time (sometimes every two weeks). I do a week of lates (finishing at 9pm) and a week of mids (finishing at 7pm), so I can only go during my early shift weeks.

My questions are:

Is £50 for a one-hour individual lesson a reasonable rate, or is it on the expensive side?

Is one hour per week enough to make progress, or would joining a group be better?

£50 sounds about right to me. We pay the tennis instructor £55 for an hour (London) and then split it between 3 kids (DD + 2 friends) as the group timings didn’t work but the rate is the rate and would be unchanged if we had 1 person or 5.

If it were me I’d probably do a few individual lessons then switch to the group. I’d enjoy the social element of the group but would want to make sure I’d grasped the absolute basics first! But up to you.

£50 is reasonable for Central London. That’s how much I pay and I looked around before committing.
