Do premier league footballers get a new kit each game?

You would think a simple Google search would answer this question....but it seems not? With all the fountain of knowledge here...does anyone know?

Do Premier league footballers reuse their kits, after a good launder of course?

Not asking for any reason...just interested. Thank you.

A few of the big clubs do just have a new set of kit for each game (seem to remember DB saying he was told this applies at Liverpool on Anfield tour). Don't think it will be the case across the whole league though.

In the premier league, yes. The ones the players use are more lightweight and breathable than the "replica" kits, as they call them, that we buy from places like JD Sports. They don't need to withstand a load of washes like a fan's shirt does. They have 2 or 3 kits each per match in case of blood/tears due to match regulations.

I think it's nearly as expensive to get them professionally cleaned as it is for the club to just get a load at cost price.

Assume as well grass stains and mud would be hard to get out as well

When your paying players £50000 a week

What's a new kit 💰

spilltheteapot · 30/11/2024 08:39

Yes they do. Multiple kits at the ready. Some change at half time if they have blood on.

I always assumed they did. Always beautifully turned out at my club!

What happens to the discarded shirts? Do they get sold?

Suzuki76 · 30/11/2024 13:57

Usually donated to charities, or sometimes swapped with another player on the pitch.

Thanks for all the responses.

Shirts also given to fans either on the pitch or when leaving the stadium. My DS has been fortunate enough to have about 4 Liverpool tops from players. He keeps trying to get Luis Diaz top, but LD doesn’t always throw/offer his. Maybe he forgets, but many players always seen walking out to the coach with their too in a clear clip-top bag, and throw/give to waiting fans.

No, they definitely have a guy who launders kits, or did when DH worked in PL football up until 2019. I mean, obviously, players do swap them on the pitch a lot, and will have more than one full kit available for each game, but no, they aren't routinely discarded/sold/auctioned for charity after one use by any means.

Definitely laundered at the Premier League club I used to work at ( Persil professional in a massive box) even though they have several of the same shirt (home, away and third kit). Unwanted and old kit gets donated to charities.

mnistooaddictive · 30/11/2024 15:39

I think I’ve heard that 3 each season and if they give away more than that they have to pay for them.

HongKongFinish · 30/11/2024 15:44

A growing number of clubs are also passing surplus kit to upcycling initiatives at the end of each season and the amount of kit they purchase across both Male and Female 1st teams plus all the academy teams is huge. I'm glad that they are addressing the sustainability, albeit some clubs more than others I think.

Needanewname42 · 30/11/2024 17:03

No I think they get new ones for special games like cup finals usually with the Cup Final written on them.
But not for every week same with the training kits, they get washed and reused.

Suzuki76 · 30/11/2024 17:04

Oh I did mean match kits; I'm sure they do reuse training gear all the time!

It probably varies anyway. I'm sure Man City have a different budget to Ipswich.

Needanewname42 · 30/11/2024 17:53

Yes I get you meant match kits.
And I'm certain they get reused for league games and cup ties, definitely not Cup finals because they get embroidered with the Cup Final Year on them, and maybe not European games.

Its rare to see players swap shirts after normal league games.
I remember reading a footballers biography where they mention the 'Kit Man asking for a shirt back after a player had swapped it'
