UK school - representative sport

We are considering a move to the UK. Our sons are both competitive at a number of sports. They will likely attend, what I understand are considered, elite private schools in Surrey.

We would like to better understand the pathways from school sport to county, or further level competition/representation.

Appreciate any insights on the typical process for progression or any information we can access that would provide more detail,

Thanks

South east regional 2025 qualifying times

My kids go/went to private school and played county and regional level in three sports.

Just echoing what PPs have said, football is about club academies not county programmes. I know a boy who went to one of the very sporty private schools in south London and was signed by an academy a good 90 minutes away. School accommodated him going to training but ultimately it was too much and he moved to an (underperforming) state school to be near the club, (He's ended up being signed for one of the top Premiership clubs but a big risk).

County and regional sport will typically fit around private school sports commitments so you play for school on Weds afternoons and Saturdays and the other sessions are often on Sundays and other weeknights.

Another friend's son is at a similarly sporty school and was at or around national level for swimming and a high level in athletics. Again, school supported this but he did most of his training at clubs.

School sport can be very good but it's often the out of school programmes that make the difference.

Have received some initial information from the school.

It seems there will be some inter school level events for athletics, swimming and cross country. That is really what we are seeking in these sports (although possibly more in cross country).

We have been told our youngest has the potential in swimming (and his relative times now for his age I believe would qualify him for county) but we are realistic that we can’t fit everything in and swimming is particularly demanding. We won’t be pursuing this given the likely football demands.

The other great thing in Australia is that there are lots of swimming and athletics representative relays via school so it is not only the very very elite that get to compete. Our older son and his friends were 1st out of 2200 schools in the state in the 4 x 100m athletics relay - a fantastic experience progressing through 5 levels of representation. I am just preparing myself for the experiences they might miss out on that they would otherwise get if we stayed in Australia.

They're not going to miss out op. There are plenty of opportunities for sports competitions in the UK. For both the elite, and standard school level.
