Osprey Poco

Hello Sporty Mumsnetters,

I am considering buying an Osprey Poco/Poco Plus for hikes in the future with my DD (5 months, so for use in maybe a few months' time). Has anyone got one and care to share some views? It looks great, but with a hefty price tag, want to kick the tyres on it before taking the plunge.

Even if you like the product itself, did you find e.g. you didn't use it because half-day hikes were just too much faff with an under-1?

Many thanks in advance.

CA

I have both an osprey poco lite and the poco plus. The.poco plus is great for hiking and travelling with because you have extra storage (when I would travel it was so handy to be able to take the rucksack off and onto the plane) but it is much heavier than the lite so I prefer using that for general days out and shorter walks.
Do you know anyone with one that you could test it out? You can also often find them secondhand much cheaper.

We have the Osprey Poco which has been great for evening walks. Our child often falls asleep because they're so comfy. It comes with sunshade & a rain cover. I agree about buying secondhand we got ours hardly used from Vinted.

Thanks for the tips. What age did you use from / what age is the earliest do you think you can use it from?

Thanks again

From when they are confidently sitting and holding themselves up at least

I don't know this particular baby carrier (my youngest child is nearly 13!) but it is well worth spending money on a good carrier - Osprey are high end rucsac manufacturers, so I imagine the baby carriers will be too.

DH used to work in an independent outdoor shop, and every week parents would come in, who'd scrimped on their baby carrier. It would be uncomfortable to carry, or uncomfortable for the baby who'd winge and not sleep, or it wouldn't stand up by itself... or something. So he'd redirect them to the "posh" baby carriers they sold, they pop the baby in, who'd promptly gurgle and fall asleep comfortably. The parents would buy the carrier, having wasted the price of the original cheaper one..

Buy the Osprey carrier. Your back and your baby will thank you for it.

Hi OP, I know it's not what your asking for as I don't know about Osprey as baby carries, I know they make very well designed hiking packs.
I had the Vaude for DS (now 13), I loved it, he was fine in from 12 months, but he was tiny as a baby, I think the recommendation is, once you baby has good core control and can sit unaided back carriers are fine.
I loved my Vaude (it was brilliant designed with a washable head cover), so ds could snooze, ds used it until he was six (again he was tiny, if iirc the weight limit was 25kg), and although by 6 he was a good walker, 5/6 miles was his limit, so he'd climb into the pack when he was tired. We would go out pretty much everyday for 5/6 hrs, and I found it really comfy.
If you're planning decent hikes these would be the things to look for:
A comfortable, padded hip strap (wide enough to ensure weight is evenly distributed.
Comfortable shoulder straps which are easy to change length.
Good ventilation.
A seat which grows with your baby / toddler
A well designed rain cover.
A headrest for your baby, and a well padded harness, ideally with washable pads.

Not essential but useful, pockets on the hip strap, for keys and phone, and pocket for water bottle.
The Vaude had a real good sized pocket for nappies, changing mat and spare clothes.
I'd recommend going somewhere you can try the different makes.

Finally once you have purchased one practice taking it on and off with a heavy weight in (but not your baby! As it's quite an art form, and surprisingly easy to get unbalanced!).

Urgh sorry for all the typos, and grammar, I've got a hideous reflection on my screen and can't see what I'm typing!

I have a Poco AG which we bought for dog walks with my eldest dd. She used it from about 8 months and we all found it very practical and comfortable, if a bit fiddly to get on with her in it by yourself! Sadly we lost ddog a couple of years ago so it hasn’t been used for my youngest. Must put it on Vinted!

The Poco Plus comes with a sunshade, rain cover, and plenty of storage for essentials like toys, nappies, and snacks www.advnture.com/reviews/osprey-poco-plus house of hazards. It’s designed to handle various weather conditions, making it versatile for different hiking scenarios.
