F1 circuits near a city break?

If you were looking to see if it was possible to get a circuit tour (if they are even possible) and combine it with a city break in Europe, where would you suggest? I am thinking about Nice for Monaco but wondering if you know of anywhere else. We are doing silverstone for MotoGP in August. DS is the F1 fan.

Barcelona’s circuit has guided tours and is accessible from the city centre with public transport combined with a walk about 45 mins (or take a taxi). We opted to walk as it wasn’t too hot, but some of the roads are fairly busy

Budapest, Hungaroring on outskirts and free shuttle buses from city centre

Monaco is lovely - although expensive doesn’t cover it, I was there last year and a Coke was €9! - but it’s a street circuit, so there isn’t anything to tour. You can see where the garages are built and recognise different corners, but there’s nothing there when the F1 isn’t there.

Just thought I’d mention that as it’s not clear if you mean a city break when the F1 is on, or a tour and a break when it’s not.

Thanks everyone. Just a city break and a visit to a circuit. Not when f1 is actually on.

We do this a lot and think it's a really good way of combining holidays and F1. So far we've done Budapest, Imola and Zandvoort then we are going to Barcelona in June. You could also do Nice/Monaco but that would be very expensive. We've also got Baku and potentially Monza on the list, plus the Portuguese one if they bring it back. The ones which are in the middle of nowhere are France, Austria and Belgium (although we have actually been to Spa - au rouge was amazing, but it's not a city break) .... Then outside of Europe a lot of them seem pretty easy to access such as Singapore, Mexico City, Melbourne, Abu Dhabi etc. We also went to the last race in Malaysia, which was really cheap and just outside KL as we did that on our way to Japan for our main holiday.

Tips: buy your tickets from the circuit's own website if you can and book flights to a close regular city destination which isn't the race destination. Eg: for Imola we booked flights to Milan then had a 2 hour train journey to Bologna and we are flying to Madrid for Barcelona. We did actually stay in Budapest for a whole week though so we missed the F1 flight increase. We save hundreds (if not more) through doing this, and book as soon as the tickets come on sale as then you usually save 20% or so on the tickets so do your grandstand research beforehand.

Just realised that I wrote that as if you're going to an actual race, sorry .... But Barcelona and Monza definitely do circuit tours (if you go in March then you can watch pre season testing) but the street circuits won't - we've walked around the tracks at Monaco and Montreal when the race wasn't on.

@servedstraight Monza which is close to Milan is lovely.

The Monza circuit is inside a Royal Park. It is also an historic track with the old banked circuit which is still accessible.

You can get there easily from Milan by local train and then bus.

Milan has a lot to offer. For fun take the DC to what I think is the poshest McDs in the world, it’s next to the Duomo in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.

You do need to book well in advance to see the last supper.

I did Budapest with ds. It was amazing. Lots to see and do in Budapest and the Grand Prix was really well organised (though it was extremely hot when we went!)

WifeOfMartyr · 06/05/2024 10:35

Ah I see not the Grand Prix - I think you can do driving experiences at the track on other days

It's an easy one as it's so close to the city

Zandvoort would be a good option. It's on the coast, and has very good transport links. Could pair it with trips to Amsterdam and Duinrell.
