Hi, I'm playing netball for a social league and don't have time to go to training unfortunately. I'm learning as I go along but it's slow progress. Does anyone have any tips for dos and don'ts to help me progress or should I find time to train ?

I'm short too 😂

Don't let the other team get the ball in your net

Well it's a start I guess 😂

My DD plays GK. She is 5'1. Her tip is practise jumping.

Practice your vertical leap, and also ensure you keep half an eye on the ball while it is play as well as your GS/GA (i.e. do not face mark). If marking in the goal circle, keep on your toes and "bop" up and down but position yourself at the side of your shooter to confuse the feeder into knowing where the safe area is for them to pass the ball in.

Basically, be a nuisance to the shooters. Even if you don't get a direct interception, getting in their heads and making it even just a little bit harder for them to receive the ball will throw them off their usual play style, which can lead to more turnover opportunities.

You could work on your speed, agility, change of direction and quickness training, but really nothing is going to substitute for actually training with your team.

Sorry but I don't see the point of playing netball if you're not going to train.
Assume the other positions are taken, because GK and GD are usually tall, and shorter players usually play C, WA or WD.
However, my main advice is to get as fit as you can. Maybe interval training.

Thanks, we don't train together, but there is a local training session I could access.

I was originally going to do WD but we often don't have enough players so this is dropped. The taller ones play GS GA.

It's not ideal but we all enjoy it and support each other.

Train. Listen to coach..
Get fit - you will have fewer injuries.
Practising jumping and landing safely (without twisting knees) is good. Wear good shoes.
Wear mouth guard.

Intercepting is the aim though to gain control of the ball with the intercept is better than deflecting, if you can manage it.

Netball trainers - good for looking after ankles for the twisting and jumping.

Thanks so much 😍 and I'd not heard of netball trainers 😊

Use your body to get in the way of GS/GA getting to their preferred position. Try and keep your opposition out of the circle by being in the way, don't allow them free run to under the ring.

Netball trainers VYPER non slip socks, get a balance board. Get someone to throw a ball at you in the garden to a space and run towards it to catch. Practice landing.

jump, wave your hands about! I like the stand by the side of GS one get in their space!

You can practice agility drills, such as ladder drills or cone drills, to improve your mobility and change direction quickly on the field with the tomb of the mask when moving in the dugout.
