After many weeks and months of waiting, we finally have an F1 discussion thread on MN!

Anyone who wants to join is welcome - regardless of how long you've been watching the sport or who you support. My only request is that we keep it respectful even when criticising our favourite driver's rivals.

We're in Barcelona this weekend for round 6 of what has been a thriller of a championship so far. I'm really excited to see how the race unfolds today, if overtaking will prove as difficult as it historically has here, if the Mercs have done a step forward in race pace, how RB and Ferrari will play around with strategy and tyres.

Saw this earlier. Sad news but not unexpected. Maybe he'll fancy a new role as a F1 TV pundit he'd be a excellent addition. Would be nice to know his opinions on F1 when he's no longer racing

Jagley · 28/07/2022 16:49

Sad to see Seb is retiring, but it wasn't unexpected and had to happen sometime. Hopefully we'll still see him around, think he'll go to support Mick even if no official role.

butterflyflutterby123 · 28/07/2022 17:32

@MadameMinimes

That's sounds nice, hadn't noticed that. Shame for Mick that he won't have the father figure around on track

Sulusu · 28/07/2022 18:06

I'm sad to see Seb retiring, especially the mellow Seb he became after leaving Red Bull. But the constant travel must be wearing with a young family. I don't think we would see him as an F1 pundit soon either as that's also a lot of travel.

My personal hope is that he takes on Sabine Schmidt's role in Top Gear of sarcastic German to poke fun at the hosts. Seb would be perfect at it. I can dream eh!

Rowgtfc72 · 28/07/2022 18:08

I'm guessing he's retiring as he's not enjoying it anymore. He's never been a fan of the f1 bureaucracy.
Shame though. One of the good guys.

PlanetNormal · 28/07/2022 19:14

Seb’s decision comes as no surprise. He is obviously devoted to his family, and we can all understand that he wants to spend more time with them. It must also be difficult to motivate yourself to qualify 17th & finish out of the points every weekend when you are a four times World Champion. It’s to his credit that he isn’t interested in staying on way past his sell-by date to collect the $$$ as his mate Raikkonen did.

For all his brilliance and multiple titles in the blown-diffuser era Red Bulls, he will rank just below the true greats of the sport, because his level dropped after his final championship season. Riccardo beat him comfortably the following season, then he went to Ferrari and while he beat Kimi, he was never consistently strong enough to seriously challenge Sir Lewis, even when he had the car to do so as in 2017. Later, Leclerc was just too quick for him.

GrandSlamFinalee · 29/07/2022 05:36

I didn’t like Seb either during his early RB days but his personality developed so much over the years. It’s sad to see him leave and I hope he’ll still be involved in F1 in some capacity and that we’ll see him around the paddock every now and then. I know he’s in touch with Mick and Charles regularly, perhaps a few others. He’s a role model for many.

Really hoping this is a straight forward race for Ferrari. On paper it should be theirs, and a 1-2 would be an ideal way to go off on the summer break. It’s not much but every single point clawed back from Max would keep the championship alive. Otherwise I’m scared we’ll see a Lewis-dominance kind of season with the title decided by October.

Rowgtfc72 · 30/07/2022 16:11

Go George!

GrandSlamFinalee · 30/07/2022 16:15

Will rewatch quali tonight but I’ve just seen the results. Really hope the Ferraris can get a 1-2 especially with the RBs so far back. Who would’ve guessed that!

NandoLorris · 30/07/2022 16:22

Mr Saturday! We were just sat here stunned and open mouthed. Out of no where! Great lap.

Tilda77 · 30/07/2022 20:35

Wow George Russell on pole. What a result! Is a very mixed up grid for the race. I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

Sulusu · 30/07/2022 20:46

I actually stood up and cheered when George got that pole. It was really unexpected and a nice surprise. The mixed up grid should hopefully make for a more exciting race as it can be tricky to pass at Hungaroring historically.

GrouchyKiwi · 30/07/2022 21:37

So exciting for George! I hope he's able to hold onto it and manages at least a podium. For the sake of the Championship I'd like to see Leclerc take the win.

MadameMinimes · 30/07/2022 21:42

I they finish where they are starting on the grid George Russell would move up to third in the championship, leapfrogging both Saint and Perez. That is a remarkable testament to his consistency this season and shows that Mercedes’ strong reliability could leave them in the picture to displace Ferrari in the constructors championship if there’s a shift in momentum following the summer break.

deuxgarcons · 31/07/2022 15:18

I don't think Ferrari want to win the championship. Hard tyres?? They're their own worst enemy.

MadameMinimes · 31/07/2022 15:53

Ferrari really need to look at what is going so wrong with their strategy calls. I honestly think that they are going to come third this season. I think Mercedes are going to overtake them in the constructors at this rate. I can’t help but feel for Charles.

GrouchyKiwi · 31/07/2022 16:31

Ferrari's strategy is awful. They've lost their drivers so many points this year.

GrandSlamFinalee · 31/07/2022 16:59

It’s not even funny anymore. They have the fastest car, arguably the fastest (or one of the 3 fastest) driver - both of those have failed sometimes, but a big chunk of points have been lost due to terrible strategy. I feel for Charles, this should have been his championship and Ferrari are sabotaging it every single weekend.

Elsiid · 31/07/2022 17:05

I honestly think Ferrari are on a bung to lose. Anyone betting on Max to win from 10th would have done well today.

Sulusu · 31/07/2022 17:22

I feel like someone up high at Ferrari has a bet on them not to win the championship. They keep self-sabotaging. Poor Charles looked completely dejected in his interviews and I can't blame him.

StarCourt · 31/07/2022 18:12

@GrandSlamFinalee I don't think
This should be Charles's championship. But I do think Ferrari should be giving him all the tools to help him get there.

Not too much - my £5 bet got me £50 return.

Even accounting for his mistakes, he should have been leading the standings right now with 1) better reliability, 2) better strategies.

Max has done just as many mistakes as Charles (with a milder outcome) but hasn’t been screwed over by his team week in, week out.

Sulusu · 01/08/2022 10:40

Fernando Alonso has signed with Aston Martin for next year. I'm surprised they went in that direction, but that might mean that Oscar Piastri finally gets a shot at an F1 seat with Alpine now.

Just seen this! Didn't expect that! My DH thought it would be Daniel Ricciardo (as much as I love him, it pains me to say I think his days are numbered with F1)
