I'm thinking of trying to learn to play golf - I've booked some lessons which are on a driving range .I have never played before - just wondered if there are any tips or things I can do to get off to a good start?

I think you are doing the best thing by having lessons from a pro.
Enjoy, it can be a very rewarding sport, also very frustrating.

Me, love it. I am not very good but it is hugely sociable. Look for a club with an active women's group.

I love the golf, hate the sexism in golf and the politics at the club so I rarely get involved in anything else apart from playing with my female comrades.

Jumping on thread hope you don't mind op.

Recently started taking lessons using borrowed clubs. Wonder if anyone can recommend a good starter set ? Looking online and some prices are Shock

Budget about £300. Will I get anything? Obv don't want to spend too much straight off.

Wilson is a decent brand, you can get a half set for about £250. Golf online has good prices but there’s a shortage of golf stuff atm. The pro I have lessons from has been saying that he can’t get hold of things for months.

Just jumping on as I recently started playing too.

On advice from various people I bought second hand clubs as a way to get a better quality set than I could otherwise afford. I got the Callaway Solaires mostly, and so far I'm very happy with them.

Thank you. That's helpful, I didn't know a half set was possible. I have noticed a lot of "out of stock" online all right so maybe second hand would be the way to go.

@Whataboutlove I got the solaires in irons and wedges, then different brands of putter, a hybrid and 5 wood. I've not got a driver yet or any more woods as I'm not good enough so I don't need them.

My golf instructor told me all you really need as a beginner is a putter, a couple of irons including 7 and 8, a pitching wedge and a hybrid or 5 wood. Then, when you get better you learn what works for you and can justify the expense of replacing them.

I learned a lot from the Youtuber Aimee Cho, and there's a great Facebook group called Beginner Golf for Women.

Good luck!

@slipperly
Thanks you for the tips!!
I just got my golf ID this morning so looking forward to getting started!

I rarely use more than that even now slipperly. Wood, 7, hybrid, sand and pitching wedge, putter. That’s usually it for me.

I like my hybrid a lot though.

My friend bought used irons but when she added a bag, wood, putter and hybrid she wasn’t much better off than if she had bought a ‘set’.

Very exciting love.
