What happens to the losers?

I actually know someone competing in Tokyo. Went to school with adult DS. Last spoke to her 3 yrs ago on the train. (And she's great in spite of results so far).

Anyway, she got knocked out in qualifying heats so won't proceed to potential medal contender or compete again in Tokyo 2020. What happens to these eliminated competitors? Do they get to stick around to cheer on rest of Team GB? Or do they have to leave right away? Does anyone know?

At the Tokyo Olympics competitors are required to return home within 48 hours after they have finished competing. This is due the health restrictions in Japan during the pandemic.

As above. Even the winners have to leave 48 hours after their last comp.

Thanks. :)

Normally yes, in Tokyo no as described by pps

There an exception I know Jade Jones stayed on until the end of Taekwondo as she was a training partner for someone else who was competing. But other than that yes 48 hours. Matty Lee is already back (was on This Morning on Friday)

There was a video of Helen Glover greeted by her children on returning home - she was back pretty quick.

It occurs to me that the village must be thinning out fast, then. As people finish their competitive fixtures. And their related entourage (like coaches) must leave with them.

I didn't know they had to leave. That's kind of sad.

It’s all quite sad this year, I keep thinking about the parents of people competing who couldn’t go & watch. They would have spent years by swimming pools/bmx tracks/ in muddy fields supporting them as kids for them to get this far - imagine not being able to be there when they won a medal

They dont even get a ticket for the Welcome Home event they have to go in a ballot along with everyone else.

It is quite sad this year, but they still look like they’re enjoying the experience (mostly - there have been a few that said missing their usual entourage made them perform worse).

Our medal winning dressage riders had to leave before their horses. And it’s sad that they couldn’t support the eventers, who supported them. But the village is always topping itself up - as some leave others arrive for their disciplines that are later in the games..
