What shoes for cross country running?

My dd is 8, she is good at running and has been put forward for an inter-school cross country race next week. She needs new shoes for school sports anyway, but I wonder if she needs special shoes for cross country running? She has turned her ankle over a couple of times recently, spraining it quite badly the first time, and I don't want her to slip. I have seen fell running shoes, and running spikes, online but have no idea what is appropriate. Would fell shoes be too heavy? (Am assuming they are for long distance mountain running?).
She has only had the ankle incidents since having new trainers lower in the ankle than her old Asics ones, the shop only had one shoe in her size, but I think she may need more support. We live in a remote rural area and so I have to shop online, as the only sports shop is really small (hence the shoe problem above, when she had a sudden growth spurt just before a race). I've been looking at trainers online all morning and am none the wiser!

I don't know, but have friends whose DDs do cross country and fell running and know that they do seem to need a variety of footwear. Someone who does know about these things might want to ask what terrain and what distance, I'd have thought.

If you don't get answers here, would the teacher who is responsible for PE be able to help maybe?

Thanks for replying. Its around a field I think, 800m. We live in Wales so field will be damp and muddy or wet and muddy depending on the weather this week... School are a bit vague and don't specify footwear. Usually she runs in bog standard trainers but because of the ankle I think she needs more grip.

weve just had this dilemma (infact I could have written your exact post!) - and ended up at a specialist running shop to find somewhere that carried and would fit running shoes small enough.
shes come home with some asics GT-1000 GS and they look and fit great

I was going to say...solid but lightweight trainers with decent tread (grip). Shouldn't need anything more fancy than them.
But I'm not sure, if she has a weak ankle. I think I might ask around on a fellrunning website.

Will do both those things. (ask re fellrunning, and check out Asics). Actually the last really good trainers she had were asics and they do seem to have good support. I am going to google the style you bought nightshade.
