Mother of all sebaceous cysts

I feel like you are all the only people who I can share this with / will enjoy it

I have had a sebaceous cyst on the back of neck for years with no problem. Suddenly it got infected and grew so alarmingly that I had to have it taken out yesterday under general anaesthetic!

Anyone who knows about cysts knows it's normal a 15 minute local anaesthetic job not a two hour surgery!

Sadly I don't have pictures of what came out of it, but it was about the size of a golf ball when I went in...

My question is if anyone knows the healing time for something like this? I'm off to have the packing removed and it redressed later, as the wound needs to be left open (unstitched) to heal 😬😬😬

I just googled and then phoned for a consultation. It was somewhere in the city of London but I live a tube ride away.

Hello all!! 👋

I’d forgotten about this thread and those pictures, now had a gruesome reminder of how horrible it all was.

in case anyone finds this when searching for advice, in the end I had it packed for 5 weeks, I dressed it a further 4, then wore dressings at night/when I needed to another 3ish. So 12 weeks in total! Had two suspected infections but just treated carefully and kept it super clean with the help of the nurse.

now I only have a scare left and a bit of a dint! Wearing necklaces is still a bit uncomfortable and I’ve got a scabby bit which I think was a mole that got cut in the incision and now healed weirdly!

picture for closure and hope for others who go through this! (Dodgy mole at the top of you zoom in)

Wow, it's amazing and will heal a bit more over the summer I'm sure.

I like scars, they tell a story and yours is one hell of a story. My 16yo DD has a huge (very messy!) scar on her leg from an NHS op and she loves it. She went through a lot and it's a reminder of that and a conversation starter. I have some scars on my leg where I got hit by a black cab when I was 22, 30 years ago. I have a very very tiny scar from my cyst which isn't noticeable at all - a bit sad there is no reminder of my cyst friend which was with me for 20 years!
