Is this cellulitis? Or infected pulled hair. TMI image

Is this cellulitis, skin is warm and feels lumpy inside, no sign of a boil or any entry wound for bacteria, could be a pulled hair follicle that's infected?
Person has been to a pharmacy and been given antibiotics, it wasn't examined. They were supposed to take 4 yesterday, took 2. And before I looked at this today it was 3pm and they hadn't taken any. So I've given one at 3 and another one now. I've also drawn a circle around the redness. I have put magnesium sulphate over it with a dressing in case it was a spot/boil under the skin.

it could be cellulitis, but it could also be something else.

If you're concerned, you need to see a dr.

fairymary87 · 15/06/2024 19:22

Possibly an abscess, what area of the body is this?

Lisapillar · 15/06/2024 19:33

Start of a Perianal abscess I reckon.

fairymary87 · 15/06/2024 19:37

Totally agree. I would got A&E and get it seen too. These can turn badly very quickly, and it looks big. I had it happen twice. The antibiotics made have been given too late. Xx

NippyCrab · 15/06/2024 20:35

It's not mine, it's at the bottom of their buttock cheek. Apparently Thursday and yesterday they were shivery and slept a lot, they feel better tonight but I will insist they attend a&e tomorrow morning. They are certainly walking better tonight. I'm annoyed they've let it get to this stage 😒
Thank you so much for all the quick replies. ❤️

It's highly likely this is pilonidal sinus disease. I urge you to get to urgent care if the infections spreads and or he feels worse and can not sit! By the looks of it I'd say he needs it sorting out. I have the condition too. X

NippyCrab · 15/06/2024 21:42

@fairymary87 he won't go tonight definitely. Apparently it's better than the last 2 days when sitting was nigh impossible and he had shivers and slept for hours. We aren't together, he works away and has left work mid rotation to come to his home. I was worried as there's no way he would leave work for anything, his Mum was seriously ill last year and he wouldn't come home, I dealt with that, that's another story. So him coming home was a flag he wasn't well.
I can make sure he attends urgent care tomorrow.
Is this something that reoccurs then? X

@fairymary87 I've just had a Google and his red area is actually at the bottom of the buttock, at the side of the cheek, the perineum, not at the tailbone.

OP posts:
WhitstablePearl · 15/06/2024 21:49

Draw around the area with a sharpie, that way you can see if the redness is expanding

fairymary87 · 15/06/2024 21:50

There's a few types. So it's perineal. The size of it is what is alarming to me. However if he can sit on it and is generally feeling better then that's good. Yes it can come back and I would get in touch with the GP xx

Iamthemoom · 15/06/2024 21:59

Just to say a family member had this a&e failed to identify it so it got very bad and they were hospitalised twice, had two operations and have only just recovered after three months of hell. I would go to a&e immediately because without antibiotics abscesses in this location can get very bad quickly and become a fistula which is hard to get rid of.

fairymary87 · 15/06/2024 22:08

I second this. A&E is the best place. It's so hard to tell, without feeling etc. we're not medical professionals just sharing experiences

NippyCrab · 16/06/2024 09:44

Morning, thank you for thw replies, it's more painful this morning, I haven't had the pleasure of checking it yet 🙄 I did draw round the area with a marker so I could assess if if got bigger.
Once I'm organised I'll take him to a&e, I've read a bit more about this type of access and the antibiotics he was given at the pharmacy won't make much difference.
X

They hardly ever work when it's that bad. Needs lancing. Came to get on you all. It's a rough one to go through. Hope he's ok. There's some support groups on fb and A&Es will be used to seeing these xx

NippyCrab · 16/06/2024 10:42

He's getting ready, it's not as puffy but harder, and very very painful.

fairymary87 · 16/06/2024 14:14

Oh no. Doesn't sound the best. How's it going now? I had it twice during pregnancy, it's an unbearable pain and just as bad as childbirth! X

NippyCrab · 16/06/2024 14:20

Well we are in a&e and they are checking to see if they can get an emergency slot in theatre to open it up and clean it out. Just waiting to hear if there's one. They don't want to leave it any longer. I wish he had come here yesterday 😩
Thank you so much for asking @fairymary87 I feel sick for him. With all our differences I'm still his wife and love him. ❤️

He's in the right place, it's gonna be a lot of tough aftercare too. He's gonna need you. It's an invasive procedure and embarrassing with the aftercare. It's a scary one as they can get septic quickly however they're clearly taking care of him now. I was so scared when I had mine. He'll feel so much better for it afterwards. recommend a ring cushion for after Care x

AnotherPoxyName · 16/06/2024 14:30

Well done posters who told OP what it was and what to do. Hope all ok OP

NippyCrab · 16/06/2024 21:49

Thank you everyone, @fairymary87 I'll get a ring cushion. The surgeon said if he had waited another day it would have perforated his bowel. They said it was a nasty abscess and deep, he's to have an MRI tomorrow to make sure there's no fistula, they didn't feel anything but just in case. He's on IV antibiotics at the moment. He says it feels a million times better. He will be in a couple of days they said. X

@fairymary87 have you had anymore? How did you heal, was it weeks? They did say that to him x

OP posts:
fairymary87 · 16/06/2024 21:59

Oh my goodness, just came on to check! It's scary how bad they can get overnight. My was the size of a 50p and overnight went 3 inches deep and 2 across! It's awful honestly. Is he on a vac pac? Sounds like he caught it had in time. It's scary how fast they can get. I was 23 weeks pregnant and mine was an abscess too. Not the cyst. With that it was drained under local anaesthetic and I had to have it drained while in the bed, I couldn't have the proper surgery due to the pregnancy. It was a 2cm open wound that was packed with Gauze 3 times a week by district nurses. Took 7 weeks to heal and came back in the exact same place with a vengeance when I was 33 weeks pregnant. Gave birth with it open! Have they left it open? However once the pregnancy was over, it healed. It came back a 7/8 times and once was drained with a needle by a surgeon. I was down for the proper surgery but I think I'll pass unless it comes back. I've not had a flare up for 6 months. have they closed the wound? I'm assuming it's open. Xxx

fairymary87 · 16/06/2024 22:01

Sorry for the typos! Long day with a toddler. X

NippyCrab · 17/06/2024 07:48

Morning it's to be left open, whats a vac pac? I've not heard anything this morning, at I messaged at 3am when I was up and he replied at 4am to say he felt not too bad and was up. I think once the Dr has checked it this morning they will decide regarding the MRI because it was so near the bowel. Id rather he came home today because I hate that hospital.
You've been through the mill with that I'm so sorry, especially with the little one. I really hope it doesn't come back for you. Xx
