Help! Huge blood blister - what do I do?

Help!

I'm on holiday and walked a full day and have 2 huge raised bubbly blood blisters between my big toe and next toe and under where I walk.

Unfortunately the next day we were out at an attraction so I just put plasters on and some painkillers but I've woken up today and they've grown!

Weere still on holiday so I really need to be up and about and not hobbling.

I've read not to pop them but they hurt 😔.

Help?!

(excuse dry manky feet!)

I'd pop with a sterile pin or other sharp object..

That looks so painful. Any idea of the cause?

thinkofnewname · 05/04/2024 06:37

Will popping relieve it do you think? Internet says not to but they're so in the way!

I'm not usually super mobile so they've come from walking all day on holiday (slowly and in short bursts) for a couple of days but they're in a really odd position! I have orthotics so maybe they're not brilliant but I don't normally walk so much. I've taken them out just in case.

But more immediately it's knowing what to do or if I need a pharmacy or what!

There not painful if I'm lying down. But they hurt to walk on! I'm hobbling

Popping will make the uncomfortableness of the extra body part go away. It won't make the skin immediately less painful though.

Ime popping blisters but not removing the outer layer of skin, works fine. If you can cover the area with a plaster once drained, even better. Try not to get rid of the skin though, just make a small hole to drain.

Agree with this advice about how to pop a blister (and in your situation I would those babies).

Make sure you clean the area before & after with alcohol wipe / antiseptic or use cooled boiled water & salt. Keep covered. Probably change your shoes, too!

You need some compeed blister plasters, sterile wipes/surgical spirit, cotton wool and a needle that you sterilise, and some medical tape.

Clean the area, sterilise the needle. Lance the blister and let it drain but do not remove the skin. Wipe away liquid, let it dry, apply compeed. Wrap in cotton wool to cushion and use the surgical tape to attach but avoid sticking it to the blister plaster itself.

Next time lubricate your skin before walking - moisturiser, vaseline would work.

Hm. The one time I popped a blister and put a compeed on it (leaving the skin intact) the plaster stuck to the loose skin and when it came off tore off the skin with it, which was bloody agony.

Is competed just for prepopped or post popped too?

I've just been into a chemist and got a pack of normal plasters and a pack of competed style (hydroseal) and some bepanthen antiseptic.

I dont have sterile means to pop other than a kettle and microwave. No needles! Can I just apply pressure??

Yes in my mind I was thinking normal plaster if it popped...

I would think padded dressing if you can find one once it’s drained. It’s going to hurt even when drained. I agree that comped will likely lift the skin if it’s drained and they won’t help whilst it’s still full of fluid.

Compeed are great for small blisters and areas rubbing before the blister develops.

They look awful, draining will relieve the pressure. If you can get a safety pin, that would work. They are often sold in pharmacies. Just need to sterilise with boiling water.

MultiplaLight · 05/04/2024 07:38

You'll need something to make a hole, pin, needle or end of sharp knife if desperate.

Compeed will pull ths skin off, unless you leave it on for a week which is what they're designed for. If you think it will stay on, Compeed. If not, go normal dressing.

thinkofnewname · 05/04/2024 08:39

OK so we're going away from shops now (!) and I've said they can do the walk but I'll watch from the car.
I can get a safety pin when we are next Near Shops.
I've got "assorted bandages" for wound protection. They look a bjt like stretchy plasters- Is this enough of a "padded dressing". I feel this is a whole world I am not ready for.

This is what I have.

I have a feeling one may have popped while I've been walking.

When you pop it, make a pair of tiny holes, one on either side of the blister, very close to the where the blister meets your foot.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/04/2024 09:10

I’ve always popped blisters and peeled off the skin, never got infections. The one time I left the blister it was fine too though, think I just put a plaster on it.

thinkofnewname · 05/04/2024 11:50

So about to go to bed and yes they've both popped 😳.

They've got very flappy skin. It's an odd place as its between toes it's not in an obvious place for a plaster.

I going to let them "breathe" (no idea of that's even a thing) while I sleep then see if I can get a dressing on them tomorrow. When I got the dressings I hadn't even considered how I'd wrap them on!

Oww that’s a really nasty place for them to be. As it’s there I’d ensure you keep the area clean and use antiseptic cream or TCP, only because dirt could get there more easily than on an open wound.

If you do go to a chemist which sells plasters for this area get those or maybe dressings and tape you can cut to size.

I’d probably not go on long walks, shorter ones yes but not long as you may irritate the area more. Having said that after a few days your feet should feel better. Maybe see if you can get surgical spirit as this hardens the skin and I’m guessing prevents blisters.

Although I do walk with orthotics I sometimes don’t do this and I’ve found sometimes orthotics can actually rub against feet creating blisters so maybe if you’re planning on walking again see what you need/don’t need.

I used to have plantar fasciitis and have tried walking in comfy trainers and actually it hasn’t made the PF flare up which is good.

idontlikealdi · 05/04/2024 14:54

You can inbeyween the toe compeed if helps

thinkofnewname · 06/04/2024 00:52

So obviously Dr Google was wrong about popping - they popped yesterday while walking (not surprising as they were so huge!) and the relief this morning is huge.!!

However I've now got cracks around my heel and side of foot as wearing trainings without orthotics had meant the were too loose and rubbed there 😭.

I'm going to just namadge my whole foot up today I think.

We're going to a market so can't not walk...

OP is this some sort of drip feed? No video of them popping?!?
How could you?

thinkofnewname · 06/04/2024 07:20

Er... Okay 😂. I could give you an "after" picture in a few hours if you like but it's not super exciting. They popped when I was out so no "action shot" I'm afraid.

If they hadn't hurt so much when I walked i think I'd have been a bit more morbidly fascinated as they were huge. I don't think even the photo shows that it was like an extra lump there that hurt every time it moved! I had no idea they could be so big.

Hmm I've woken up and they're now uncontrollably itchy. Like I can't sleep they're so itchy. Is this normal??? I thought they were sorted now!

I've taken an anti histamine but is there anything else I can do??

OP posts:
LaPalmaLlama · 06/04/2024 16:02

Can you get some iodine? Pour some of that on- it’ll sting like a bastard but will stop them getting infected.

As @LaPalmaLlama says try iodine on them.

Apparently according to google skin itches when it's healing so don't worry about that. Maybe if you're near a chemist or supermarket try to get some vitamin c and zinc as this will prevent infection.

You might need an anti histimane for pollen but not for your blisters!
