Are these corns?

OH thinks MN is the best place to ask because he cannot get in to see the GP for love nor money.

What are these lumps on his big toes? He stands all day at work, his job wouldn't get done sitting down, and these lumps have been dreadfully painful, for weeks.

Can you lovely Sporners help?

Could they be chilblains? I had chilblains once years ago when I was living somewhere without central heating, and your photo made me think of them (and that cold winter!)

HermioneWeasley · 13/12/2022 22:02

They don’t look like corns to me - corns are drier and less inflamed looking

CornyToes · 14/12/2022 11:47

Thank you so so much for coming back to me - and for clarifying that these are not corns.

How does one address chilblains? What even are they?! Interestingly he swears blind that he's never allowed his feet to get so desperately freezing that this might have happened (although I'm not even sure that's the catalyst), and in March 2020 he still claims he had Covid toe..... looking at a couple of photos online, I'm now thinking that might have been the start of this...

They don’t look corns

pp could be correct about chilblains, especially with the extreme cold we are having

its the going from cold to hot that will increase the chances of this, does he have hit air full Waco when driving? Put feet on hot water bottle?

Blowyourowntrumpet · 15/12/2022 21:18

Possibly chilblains. It wouldn't occur to me to try to see the GP about this.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/12/2022 21:20

It could be covid toe, I have it and it’s essentially chilblains. I find it gets aggravated by touching on my shoes, those look like his ties have maybe rubbed the top of his shoes?

BelenaConhamHarter · 15/12/2022 21:21

I had terrible chilblains. The answer is warm feet. Two or three pairs of socks and a pair of Uggs and they completely cleared up.

They're horrible when you have them, burny / itchy.

Probablymagrat · 16/12/2022 14:03

Chilblains are awful, I used to get them badly before I was put on heart medication.

You must prevent them from cracking if possible, that is even more painful. Keep them greased with vaseline or wintergreen ointment or vicks vaporub if you can get it.

One thing you mustn't do is wear socks that are too tight on the ankle and across the toes as that cuts down the circulation even more and makes them worse.

Wear shoes or boots with plenty of room and thick soles to insulated the feet from the cold floor, something like DMs are ideal. Wear wool socks again with plenty of wriggle room and walk about as much as possible.

There is an ointment called balmosa which might help, I never found it very helpful tbh, but my husband uses it.

CountlesScreamingArgonauts · 16/12/2022 20:05

Ibuprofen gel is brilliant for chilblains. I think that's what those are

CornyToes · 16/12/2022 20:28

Thank you so much for all the helpful advice - off to the pharmacy tomorrow and thick cotton socks are on the shopping list. Really do appreciate your help in our quest to relieve OH of such ridiculously painful toes!

That are calluses where shoes are rubbing.
