Can anyone tell me what this might be on DD’s head? She is just getting over chicken pox where she had lots on her face and under her hair on her scalp and today I noticed all this yellow grit type stuff in her hair. It’s definitely not lice (or I hope not as there were loads. Nothings crawling and she’s not overly itchy apart from the few chicken pox scabs left) is it just over production on her scalp from the pox?

I’ve just given her hair a thorough wash and brush and it was like grains of sand in the bottom of the shower tray. They brushed out easily when dry as well.

Is it crust from pox scabs on her scalp?

It looks a bit like cradle cap, it can happen in older kids not just babies

Looks like cradle cap to me: both my older children still get it (5 and 4), the shampoo you can get from the chemist works but you'll need to use it a few times to get rid of it

It's totally harmless though so fine to leave too

TheGriffle · 09/06/2022 19:46

I was wondering if it was cradle cappy but it really is little yellow grains/crystals not big crusts/flakes like when she was little so I wasn’t sure. I might get some dentinox shampoo in that case and see if it helps, loved the smell of that stuff!

I have been able to get some of the bigger scabs out of her hair from the pox but this stuff is just all over the top of her head.

My son got cradle cap a couple of years ago, he was 12!
We switched him to Head and Shoulders and nit-combed his hair to get the scabby/yellow bits out and he's been free of it since.
He also had terrible chicken pox on his scalp at 7y but it was too sore for us to comb then, though it looked quite similar afterwards.

If it’s cradle cap, you can use coconut oil on it. Massage it into the scalp, leave for a while to soften, then get combing! Shampoo thoroughly, rinse, comb again.
