Sebacious Cyst - is it supposed to hurt this much?

Hi all,
I've got a sebacious cyst - had it for years and a week ago Wednesday (17th) it started leaking a bit of pus. Spoke to the on-call nurse the next day - I thought it was getting better so he said he'd hold off on antibiotics. Spoke to a different on-call nurse last Friday when there was no change (not getting better or worse), she decided against antibiotics at the time.

Had it squeezed out (! lots of pus and a bit of blood) on Tuesday by the GP. He said it looked a bit infected, so I started on Flucloxacillin that night.

Since yesterday it's hurting more and more - it was merely tender before. It's reaaaalllly sensitive to my clothes brushing over it now. It stopped producing anything on the plaster covering it a couple of days ago and seems to be capped over.

Not hot to touch, just a bit red - will post photo.

Is the pain a sign it's getting worse? Or will it get better after this? Should I do anything??

Yes to most but not sure about the capsule yet, I think they can refer me but it all happened so suddenly today. (I was at work this morning!)

Did they remove the sac? If they didn’t it will just keep refilling.

MushMonster · 29/11/2021 20:59

I hope you are better OP. Did they remove the sac itself?

Normally they have to remove the yukky bits and get rid of any infection. Then, once this is done, they can remove the sac/capsule. I had to wait 3 weeks or so.

BackBleb · 29/11/2021 21:20

I think they tried to remove the sack but I started hyperventilating and my hands went tingly, I wasn't having any of that today.

From what I understand, if it is infected (which it may be if it is red and painful) then they cannot remove the sac/capsule and have to wait for the infection to go first.

I'm not sure there's ever been doubt that it was infected. In hindsight, I think my using ibuprofen due to my period pains masked the pain last week.

Are you feeling better? For me once it oozed first time I felt so much better. It was pulling at my muscles and skin, and that was quite painful.
Now it is almost flat, instead of the original pea size round cyst I had. But no signs of an specialist appointment yet.

BackBleb · 30/11/2021 19:10

I am feeling better since I had it repacked today, although that was certainly painful too. I don't know how long the packing/dressing is going to go on for, but it seems like it will be a right pain at the weekend. (And tomorrow, since the surgery is closed for staff training.)

It's a different kind of pain now though, and it's good to know it's on the way to healing.

I wanted to come back and thank everyone for the handholding! It's still being packed/dressed every other day, but I've finally passed the point where it can actually be packed (now the absorbent stuff is just being laid on top), so I'm hopeful that it will all be over soon. (And then I get to ask about the sac I guess.)

There was also a secondary drama where the antibiotics wiped out all my good digestive flora. Ergh. Take your probiotics, folks.

My husband has been a real champ and has done the weekend dressings for me and will do them all over Xmas.

And it also doesn't really hurt anymore, the bandage is probably more annoying than the wound at this point.

Blimey, how deep was it? I didn’t realise they might need packing for so long! Dh keeps trying to cut my decade old cyst out with a potato knife but it’s solid.

Viviennemary · 23/12/2021 10:54

I am not a medical person but it sounds like thd doctor didnt remove the sac so it swelled up again.

Viviennemary · 23/12/2021 10:55

Didnt read your updates. Glad to hear its being treated.

TrashyPanda · 23/12/2021 12:19

You have had a time of it.

Glad the end is in sight

WTF!?!?

(Tell us more!)

BackBleb · 13/01/2022 21:15

@CorvidCorvid

OMg, don't let your DH cut it out, yikes!

I think it was maybe 1.5cm deep? It still hasn't even fully healed yet, but they reckon it'll be done soon. (A week or so?) I'm looking forward to being able to wash my back in the shower!
