Anyone know what this might be?

Hopefully the photo has attached to the post.

This lump randomly appeared a couple of weeks ago. It feels as hard as bone and doesn't feel like it moves around. That photo was when I noticed it, it's grown since then but is kind of less noticeable because it's grown wider instead of taller if you know what I mean. It doesn't hurt but when I press it it feels a bit sore/irritated.

Anyone have an idea? I've not know whether it's worth calling the doctors and don't want to waste anyone's time.

Ganglion cyst?

uhtredsonofuhtred1 · 28/02/2021 20:02

My MIL suggested that over the phone. She said she used to have a recurring one that would pop up and be really painful and then ease off again. I'd wondered if they were always painful or could they just "be there"?

Bash it with a Bible.

Happytentoes · 28/02/2021 20:08

They don’t always hurt. I have one that pops up now and again. No idea what triggers it.

GoryGilmore · 28/02/2021 20:13

Looks just like my ganglion cyst. Pops up occasionally, stays for a few months and then goes again. Annoys me when it’s there though. It doesn’t hurt, I just find it irritating. Once tried smacking it really hard with a heavy chopping board (didn’t have a Bible!) and I just ended up with a very sore hand, so I wouldn’t recommend hitting it with anything.

debsrose56 · 28/02/2021 20:17

Ive had a Ganglion cyst, did know what it was at the time so went to the doctors and they said I could get it drained or just leave it.
I decided to leave it as wasn't painful more annoying and after about a 2 years it just went and never come back.that was about 20 years ago.

uhtredsonofuhtred1 · 28/02/2021 20:24

Aah well it's sounds like that might be what it is then thanks everyone.

My MiL also said she was told to bash it with a bible but it hurt like hell so she never tried it again.

I started to get really panicky after my horrible abusive exH started saying it looks like cancer and talking about me dying.

Your ex sounds like an arsehole, ignore him.

I’m sure your GP would prefer you spoke to them if it put your mind at rest though. At our surgery they get you to send in a photo first, so it’s not a huge inconvenience and they can probably confirm by doing that. Although I have no medical background, it really does look exactly the same as my ganglion cyst! I wouldn’t worry OP.

starfishmummy · 28/02/2021 21:18

I dont think bashing them with a bible (other heavy books are available) is recommended

Forestcantrun · 28/02/2021 21:27

Ganglion. Leave it be. If it gets massive and affects movement in the joint it can be removed surgically but otherwise it'll prob disappear.

Longdistance · 01/03/2021 00:52

I have one on my foot. It’s not going anywhere. I’ve had it for about six years. Not even binge bashing is getting rid of mine.

justilou1 · 01/03/2021 04:42

Ganglion. Do NOT whack it whatever you do. Those things are like icebergs. They’re much bigger underground and that thing is going right into the base of your thumb. I’ll bet you have a history of a clicky wrist. Chances are you have a slightly hyper flexible wrist and if you’re not careful, you’ll end up with a dislocated thumb if you smash that ganglion. If your thumb gets achey or looks different to the other one, you’ll need a hand surgeon. You’re looking at what is known as midline instability.

loubieloo4 · 01/03/2021 08:09

I popped mine 🙈 it was like clear jelly!

justilou1 · 01/03/2021 08:27

They’re full of synovial fluid, which is the stuff that is in the discs between your spinal joints, etc... The reason I’m suggesting OP doesn’t smash that one is because the root of it will be right down at the base of the thumb where the scaphoid process and the ulnar joint meet, and the act of smashing the ganglion could dislocate the thumb. Photo attached is mine AFTER surgery.

Anyone know what this might be?
picklemewalnuts · 01/03/2021 09:53

My mum smashed one accidentally. She caught her hand on something- hurt like hell- then after a few sore days she noticed the ganglion has gone.

Atalune · 01/03/2021 09:57

You would bash your ex with the bible! What a bastard.

That’s a joke. I do not condone violence.

It’s nothing to worry about.

olympicsrock · 01/03/2021 11:31

Yes it’s a ganglion. Leave it alone ( doctor)
