Gross photo of my mouth. Tonsil stones?

I I apologise in advance but I did know where else to ask this.
Husband has been ill for a few days and yesterday I started with a short throat that hurts when I swallow. I've just had a look inside my mouth and found some white spots on the side of my mouth near my tonsils.
I have prodded them and they didn't move or seem to be removable but I know you lot are well up on gross ailments! Help!

Tonsillitis

WellVersedInEtiquette · 12/11/2019 13:00

Argh. Not what I need. Daft question but do you always need antibiotics for tonsillitis? X

Yes - get thee to Dr asap - the sooner you start, the better. Stock up on ice lollies and ask the pharmacy to recommend something to numb your throat. I was delirious the one and only time I had this - it was awful and was left with a hacking cough for two weeks after

WellVersedInEtiquette · 12/11/2019 17:57

@floffel thank you. Luckily our doctors do an open surgery in the mornings so I'll nip tomorrow.

Zoomed in pic! I don't have a temp though?

It's tonsilitis. When it's yellow like that you need antibiotics as it isn't viral but bacterial.

WellVersedInEtiquette · 12/11/2019 22:35

@LyndaLaHughes thank you for that. I'll go tomorrow. I've started to feel worse as I go through the evening but still don't have a temp. Having said that I've been on top of the paracetamol all day.

Yes, definitely do go but tonsillitis does not always require antibiotics. Your GP will assess based on current guidelines.

QueenofPain · 12/11/2019 22:53

You don’t necessarily need antibiotics. Clinicians use a scoring system based on the probability of it being a strep infection. Go and get checked over by the GP and let them decide if you need antibiotics.

OhMyDarling · 12/11/2019 22:54

I had it a few wks ago... tonsillitis.
Proud of my puss riddled tonsils. But no one in RL wanted to see my photos. Relishing the opportunity now!

Had antibiotics for the first time in years- bloody amazing. Think they worked so well as I never take medicines so once in my system they zapped the bacteria pronto!
God bless the NHS for saving me from feeling awful!

WellVersedInEtiquette · 13/11/2019 13:23

Thanks all. I've been to the doctors this morning and he used the words 'absolutely covered in pus'! 😕
He's put me on 2 antibiotics four times daily for ten days!! That seemed like a lot.
However during the night I barely slept I was in so much pain. My glands are huge and hard and my throat hurts all the time but is 1 million times worse when I have to swallow. I'd also developed a temperature overnight. I'm just so glad our doctors provide open surgery in the mornings because the first appointment I could get was Friday afternoon (which I know is still really good but it's a long time away when you feel shocking!)

@OhMyDarling I'm glad I've given you a safe space to show off your photos and hope you're better now! Wink

Fairly standard dose - I get tonsillitis a lot. Once had a doctor ask how I knew it was tonsillitis so I opened my mouth, he recoiled and started typing the prescription Grin
Try warm stuff. Not hot but warm cups of tea, soup etc. Nothing acidic (no tomato soup trust me it hurts!) warm vimto is good
Sleep and rest and painkillers. There seems to be two types, the people who have it and manage to work/be normal and the type where you can't swallow your own spit without wincing and are stuck in bed whimpering

floffel · 13/11/2019 16:11

Glad you got an appointment quickly OP, hope you feel much better soon

Remembering my own miserable bout of it, don't do anything, just rest up and accept help. no work, no shopping, no laundry, no housework. If you haven't already, do get throat numbing lozenges - they help greatly and keep dosed up with painkillers too.

WellVersedInEtiquette · 13/11/2019 18:58

@ClientListQueen I'm not quite whimpering in my bed but other than that I'm definitely in the second camp. The throat numbing stuff isn't touching it at all. Must be aiming it wrong? I'm not feeling much difference when I have taken the painkillers. I'm absolutely exhausted but with three children resting isn't likely.
My daughter has just taken another photo for me...

I'm going back to the doctors today. One side is now really swollen and touching my tonsils. I'm hoping for some better pain relief and that it's not quinsy 😭

I really feel for you. I ended up in hospital with it last time and on steroids and IV antibiotics. You are right to go back and get it rechecked.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 15/11/2019 11:01

Woah that looks so painful! Have you tried some tyrozets for the pain?

KnickerBockerAndrew · 15/11/2019 11:02

My God, that looks so painful. Hope you're ok OP x

WellVersedInEtiquette · 15/11/2019 11:20

I'm now on stronger painkillers, steroids and something to settle my stomach as the steroids are supposed to upset it.
I've to keep on with the antibiotics obviously along with the spray and ibruprofen. I'm praying the new painkillers work because nothing is really touching it so far.
I did try the tyrozet lozenges but they didn't do anything Confused
I'm feeling very sorry for myself today.

How are you feeling ?

Whatthebeepisthishelpsporners · 11/01/2020 06:09

Oh sweetheart, I work in the dental field, (I clean teeth 😅 and do Botox and fillers) so not a dentist but not a nurse and did 3 years at uni for that! Definitely looks like an infection I.e tonsillitis. I’d advise going GP especially if your glands are up. They may describe amoxicillin, or they may suggest you go see your dentist just in case (so they can prescribe you amoxicillin) hope you feel better soon that looks so rough xxx
