Not too exciting but a recurring Thing on 6mos ear?

My dd2 was born with this, it refills every time it is squeezed. Doctor wasn't fussed about it, it is showing no signs of going and I'm wondering if it is a cyst of some kind? I didn't realise babies could be born with something like this though as it's not closed under the skin like I would expect!

It looks and acts like my old piercing holes with the emptying and refilling but unless she's really rebellious without me realising, I don't think she got piercings in utero Wink

Does the little sac get removed when it is squeezed? If not, then it would just fill up again

Em3978 · 17/10/2019 13:01

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preauricular_sinus_and_cyst looks like this. Worth keeping an eye on in case it gets infected.

QueenOfCatan · 17/10/2019 15:35

The sac does not come out, but then I haven't squeezed it hard enough to I don't think!
That wiki article looks like it, how interesting to know what it is finally! I have asked the doctors a few times and they just shrug and say its nothing to worry about, but I'd never seen one despite being a bit of a sporner so wondered what it actually was.

I didn't realise it was just you squeezing it. Thought maybe it was a doctor.

MotherOfWren · 17/10/2019 15:51

My DD, 3, has had this since birth it's quite common it's called a Preauricular pit it's nothing to worry about. my DDs one doesn't fill up as much anymore but when it does I try to leave it a while and then wash it away in a warm bath as otherwise it can be a bit painful for her to squeeze it. X

QueenOfCatan · 17/10/2019 15:52

A doctor has squeezed it but I give it a gentle prod once a week or so.

That's reassuring, thanks motherofwren :) I tend to prod this one after a long warm bath too and it comes out without bothering DD very much at the moment thankfully.

My DS has these on both sides , for him they are part of a much wider problem called Branchial Oto Renal Syndrome.

MotherOfWren · 17/10/2019 16:01

You're welcome. I don't think it ever fills, it's gonna be there for good. I do think I remember our doctor saying not to prod too often as in encourages more to form and can make it inflamed etc. TBH I can't remember the last time I had to drain it maybe 6+ months so it definitely does ease up. A bit of sudo cream after you have washed it out should help it too.

BUBBLEBATHBISQUE · 17/10/2019 16:05

I have these on both sides too! My brother said it was from when I was a tadpole and I had gills. Angry

QueenOfCatan · 18/10/2019 13:51

Sorry bubble, that did make me laugh! I could see my sister saying similar if I had them!

Thanks again though, it's really good to know what they are so I can just keep an eye on it :)

My son has this too, we tell him it's where the price tag was when we bought him Smile

INeedToGetHealthy · 26/10/2019 17:59

My 20 yo DS has these in both ears. My late DMil had them too.

EllieFredrickson · 26/10/2019 22:43

I have one of these and my mum and daughter too. Mine refills and needs a squeeze to clear it every couple of weeks - medical necessity of courseGrin

InkyFANGERSInkyFace · 26/10/2019 22:46

I've seen these loads on some of the sporner vids on YouTube, I'm not sure but I think they might be some evolutionary throwback or something, I can't remember if as an adult you can have something done to them so they don't fill anymore.
