Any ideas what I can do for this? Does he need to see a GP? He's 6 and has a very low pain threshold.

Wow! That looks very sore. Is he exhibiting any signs of being poorly with it? Fever? Chills? If yes, I might take him to A&E.

I would definitely consult with the gp if it is no better tomorrow.

Sickofsquishies · 16/06/2019 17:36

No other symptoms at all, just pain. It's only been like this since this afternoon, red and swollen yesterday but not this bad. Thank you

Those nails look very short. An infection due to this? Would he let you soak it in warm saline tonight? You could draw a line around the red bit to see if it spreads. Looks really sore.

Quartz2208 · 16/06/2019 17:40

yes I would do salt bathing for now and get it checked out in case it needs antibiotics or antibiotic cream

Wolfiefan · 16/06/2019 17:41

Hope he feels better soon. Watch socks etc don’t stick to it. Ouch.

Sickofsquishies · 16/06/2019 17:42

Thank you, he bites his toe nails and we have been trying to stop him so hopefully this will be a lesson. I've tried bathing it in salt water but it stung too much and he's now refusing.

I second drawing a line around red to make sure it isn’t spreading.

Would he allow you to bath it in plain warm water?

Have you given him any paracetamol for pain?

SamBaileys · 16/06/2019 17:45

My dd had something similar on her toe and then one on her finger..gp dressed the toe with an iodine dressing and it healed but she needed antibiotics for the finger. I would take him.

SamBaileys · 16/06/2019 17:46

I think the gp said they were wicklows.

Seeline · 16/06/2019 17:49

My Ds was a toe nail biter. He had a couple of infections like this. Both needed ABs. The second time it was the revolting banana flavour one which he really struggled to get down. We kept reminding him about nasty toe medicine, and he did stop biting eventually.

Sickofsquishies · 16/06/2019 17:49

Thank you, I will try to get him to bathe it tonight and get him to the GP tomorrow. As long as nobody thinks he needs to go to urgent care or a & e tonight, I've never had anything like this to deal with before

It looks like it’s infected. I’d draw a line around it to see if the redness spreads, and give him some calpol for the pain. I’d also speak to NHS 111 for proper medical some advice.

chickhonhoneybabe · 16/06/2019 17:52

Sorry meant.. i’d ring NHS 111 for some proper medical advice as it looks infected.

Dagnabit · 16/06/2019 17:54

My son had a toe like this and it took 2 lots of antibiotics to clear it up. It was to do with the nail being cut too short and digging into the skin. My advice would be to visit your GP.

Sickofsquishies · 16/06/2019 18:33

Thank you, called 111 and they said to see a GP within 24 hours so I'll take him tomorrow, thanks for all your help

Paranychia (?) - I had one on my toe, very sore & unpleasant it’s basically an infection where the toe skin joins the nails. I had an antibiotic cream and oral antibiotics too.

theSnuffster · 17/06/2019 16:57

I'm sure you've seen the GP for antibiotics for now.

Just wanted to say that my DD has had this a few times. We always soak her foot in hot salty water before applying cream and covering with a plaster overnight. Once she sat soaking it for ages and when I touched her toe to dry it afterwards green puss shot out! Problem solved!

justbeniceplease · 17/06/2019 17:00

That is infected and I would get some magnesium sulphate paste on it tonight and off to the nurse tomorrow.

justbeniceplease · 17/06/2019 17:00

Omg sorry didn't realise he had been seen 🤦🏻‍♀️

Sickofsquishies · 18/06/2019 22:01

No worries, thank you for your responses. He was prescribed antibiotic cream but the toe got much worse throughout the day so we went to the urgent care centre and they prescribed oral antibiotics. Getting them to not him is another matter but fingers crossed this clears it up. We were told not to soak it because the water can get under the nail and make the infection worse.
