Infected?

These are DS’s big toes.

One has a week old blister on. I’m not sure if it’s infected.

The other got bruised yesterday at rugby.

I don’t think either is broken but I’m starting to wonder if we need to seek some medical help? We’re not in the UK so it’s a real faff. 😫😫

The blister did pop at one point but has fluid in it again.

That redness does look like infection. Is it hot to the touch? Think I would get him checked out.

It looks ok but can you access inadine (an iodine soaked gauze)? I would bandage blister toe with that and see tomorrow. Bruised toe I would also wait and see.

2 answers...

1 black toe... Place foot in HOT SALTY WATER (hot as can take). Leave in there for 5 mins.
Using a clean pin/needle, pierce the infection. .... That's what I'd do for myself, but in no Dr! I'd then slap loads of germolene and wrap in lint n tape.

The blister... I was taught by an sas medic (honestly, cross.my heart) the best treatment for a foot blister... Cut away blister to dry out ... Best done early evening at home... In the morning, wrap the top in about 3 layers of MICROPORE TAPE.... this will protect the blister, and let any "juice" ooze. This IS the fastest way to heal a foot blister... ALWAYS WORKED FOR ME.
When it's still a blister, it will KEEP bursting n rubbing.

Sorry not a softly approach, but both work for me... But then I'm a bloke! lol

The red area is hot to the touch and spreading. I sent some pictures to the doctor (80k / an hours drive away) and he said he needs AB. Sigh. DS says it feels like it has its own heart beat.

I think the blister needs to be drained too. Will see what DS thinks....

Am former A&E nurse and would not think it daft to see your son in A&E for his big toe - you don't mention how it became bruised, but guess there was a traumatic injury rather than it just rubbing on his boot, as such, should have an X-ray to exclude bones injury before trephining the nail (making a hole in the nail with a red hot needle) to release the pressure the collection of blood is causing.
Am sure they'd be happy to se his blister at the same time!

It was someone standing on his foot. In training before the match!! He’s had the boots a while and they’re normally comfy.

Thankyou, I’ll keep that in mind and see how he is today. Is the nail likely to need piercing? 😵

In A&E awaiting a doctor to decide if he needs an X-ray. Be grateful for the NHS. This system is mad!

Xrayed but no fracture. Nail pierced to relieve the pressure.

Btw how is the nail doing

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 14/03/2019 11:41

Thanks for asking! The black colour has largely disappeared but it’s coming loose now.
