I have a nasty paronychia on my finger for over a week now. Was soaking in either 50/50 antibac soap or salt water to no avail. Immense pain, some pus drained out last night but no improvement. Went to pharmacy who advised antibiotics so have spoken to (but not actually seen) doc and got those (had to wait for out of hours as my own gp had no appts!) Pharmacist also recommended mag sulphate which I have applied twice now but had to remove after 20 mins or so both times as I couldn't bear the pain. How long should I leave it on? Is it normal for it to hurt so bloody much and when will it stop? I've started the antibiotics so hoping for a bit of relief soon but any advice welcome. Should I bandage or not?

Oooh, poor you, it looks sore!

Could you ice pack it, compress, and pierce it with a sterilized needle?

I would think it will be less painful when the puss drains.

Thanks for that, hadn't thought of ice. Might do that now. Don't feel brace enough to lance or squeeze though as it hurts like hell. Thought the mag sulph would draw out the pus but I can't leave it on long enough. It'll have to be paracetamol and bed for now.

I had this on my toe years ago. My god the Pain, and the relief when it finally burst. I alternated ice and hot compresses and that helped a lot.

Had them on both big toes at various times over the years too...eventually had nails removed and both grew back fine. Feels like the nail might lift itself though on my finger. Confused

My brother had this and despite antibiotics still needed it lanced before the infection would subside. Gp surgery refused to lance it and sent us off to a and e. He vomited with the pain when it was lanced but said relief afterwards was amazing.

Nooo! That is NOT what I want to hear especially as DH and I are going away this weekend for the first time in years without dcs! Sad

What about a walk in centre or minor injuries unit? Might be worth a try

erniewise · 05/04/2018 08:01

Thanks @Heart but I don't think we have walk in centres or minor injuries unit where I live. Just GP or A&E...or out of hours GP who just chatted with me over the phone and left a prescription for collection. Seems a wee bit better this morning though I'm still in bed and haven't examined it yet!

Aww thats a shame, we don't have walk in centres but we have minor injuries. There was a man came in to have a black head removed when I was there before (and i wanted to ask if I could watch lol) sorry I couldn't be much help, hopefully you can get it seen soon

Knittedfairies · 05/04/2018 19:39

Ouch! That looks sore... (My grandma used to make a sugar and soap poultice to bring something like that to a head; grated bar soap and an equal amount of sugar mixed together with enough warm water to make a stiff paste. Slather it on and cover the affected area. For a old wives’ tale it was surprisingly effective!. Not expecting you to grate soap; I’m sure medicine has moved on since then..)

Thanks folks. It is a little better this evening. Have tried everything today tbh...soaking in salt water, soaking in water with tea tree oil, covering with mag sulph paste, dressing/no dressing. No idea whether it's going to help but I think the antibiotics will help. Would you cover or not- just a bit worried that it stays quite wet if I put a plaster on. At the moment I'm leaving it uncovered to see if it'll dry up but will need to protect it when I'm out and about as it is agony when I touch against anything!
